CV Grease

Ummm....... :wtc:

You don't fill CV's if its leaking get a rebuilt one. They run about $80-100.

Probably wheel bearing grease, although I think CV's have their own special grease.

A cv that got a hole in the boot today isnt what I would call trash and in need of replacement. I would just say it needs a new boot and grease before I go anywhere.

The CV will fail down the road. I would be suprised if you find a boot that is made for our axle and not a universal fit junk. Spend the money and do the repair right.

Right, and then I will fix that problem if it ever does arise, but right now, there isnt anything wrong with my tripods, so im not going to replace them. Its like 7 nuts total, its really not a big job. at all.

Tripods are the things that go into your differential its like three radially mounted spherical beraings that sit on needle bearings. Pretty cool things.

For how to do it, i'm not going to go into that now, I have to get up for work tommorrow, but do a search, its probably been mentioned before on this forum.

They havent been successful in making Star Trek's transporter a reality yet, so I have to rely on my own muscle to somehow get the boot AROUND the axle. I havent thought of a good way aside from taking it all apart

Thanks for being sarcastic dick.

If you're going to do all that replace the axle.

Look at my second post, I said that its an easy job, and I'm not looking to replace parts that obviously aren't broken. Thats a waste of money. And I don't really have anywhere to keep greasy axle "spares" so it would be like throwing mad monies out the window.

So is anyone else looking to point me in the right direction with the grease (which i am going to need regardless of if i replace just the boot or the axle as well)

Didn't I point you in the right direction? See my second post.

Why would you hang on to a spare axle? First, they use them for cores. Second, if you didn't need it dump it?

FWIW: You have to do the same amount of work to get the axle out. The only difference is you're not pulling it out of the transmission. Just curious how far did you drive with it torn? How big is the tear/leak?

its a little bigger than a pinhole. maybe the tip of a pen and i drove it about 2 blocks from my friends house to mine. I replaced the balljoints and hubs after work and grease was oozing out a little when i was pushing the axle back into the new hub.

The $50 or so I would save by not replacing something that isnt broken is worth a whole lot more than another 40 minutes that I would spend replacing the axle afterwards, given that the cv has now become cursed with hex put on it since having a small hole in the boot for about 5 hours at this point

Just go to autozone and get a boot replacement. Mine came with a packet of replacement grease. I had to hack axle parts together when I did my Getrag swap, I used one of these then and it seems fine. You'll need that band crimping tool though, I forget what it's called and can't remember where I got mine.

x2^ Their boot replacement kits are pretty good. Save that axle! I got a couple of hand-me-down spares just in case.
