crazy idle....gettin really annoyed

i just don't know wtf is wrong, but it's been getting more and more on my nerves.....when i first start the car, everything is fine. as soon as the cooling fan kicks on, or i touch the gas, it idles up to like 2000-2500rpm. it will generally stay like this until the car sits for a bit. although sometimes when i come to a complete stop it kicks back down. it also revs up to like 3000 in between shifts. it sounds like ass. i meaen the car will practically drive itself cause it wants to keep the rpms up so high. i've checked vaccuum lines and replaced the IAC.....no change. any clues? a chip problem perhaps? damn this thing

i just had this happen to me recently, i replaced the heating tube from the firewall to the block and i accidently pulled the vaccuum line that runs underneath the back of the plenum. it reacted the exact same way as your is.

i am sure you have already checked that but i figured i would try and help out, just in case you may have overlooked that one for some reason. good luck

i'm willing to check or recheck anything. by under do you mean i have to remove the plenum, or is it visible between the engine and the firewall?

it is tucked up under the rear of the plenum, you do not have remove it. it is just to the left of where your pcv line connects. i will get a pic later when i get a minute if u don't find it. it is hard to get it.

Also maybe the Coolant temperature sensor? That is my last sensor I need to replace and I have a crazy high idle sometimes. Once I start driving it goes back to normal though.

Definitely come up so we can take a ride in the Catbus!

my car is doing the same thing... when i put it in drive it jerks forward and then continues to go up to 35 mph without touching the gas pedal... what motor do you have?

Like I said, drive the car up here. I have a few things I wanna look at on that car/engine, after the problems Ive had with mine. They seem somewhat similar.

hey maybe we could look at mine too and figure out why it idles at like 2k plus for about 10-15 seconds after I start it and see why it doesn't start in the morning the first time sometimes... I don't think I am too far... :P

UPDATE: changed the coolant temp sensor, no change. changed the TPS, and it was worse....idling at about 3500rpm. i have found that if i unplug the TPS, the car idles and revs perfectly......what the hell is going on here??

  • 2 months later...

changed the iac....still no better. this has to be an electrical problem somewhere......does the chip programming have anything to do with cooling fans/idle?

One of my vacumme lines was disconected. The rpm's floated between 1,700 to 500. if I even TOUCHED the accelerator, the RPM's would go up to about 3,000 for about 1.25858767499039 seconds. Then slowly climb back down to do their crazy thing again. Also there was a hissing noise in the engine compartment.

I'm in the same boat as you still. Haven't gotten over 2000rpm idle yet though. I'm guessing LIM slowly leaking or something, b/c I've occasionally lost a large amount of coolant in a short time. No real leaks either
