z34mightymachine
Well I just found out by myself this evening that I have a bad ignition coil. I'm going to change all 3 of them and I will change the spark plugs and wires. I well let you guys no how it turns out!!!
ns87
Its expensive to replace all three coil packs, but I still recommend it. I replaced my ICM, then a coil pack. A year later, another coil pack died. At that point I sucked it up and replaced the last two. What a pain to get to
z34mightymachine
Yeah the coil packs are anoying, I had replaced them on my Z24 Cavalier. It took me a while to change them. I'm hoping from this experience I might be able to change them a bit quicker on my Z34. We will see how it turns out when I have the time to change them. Venom
Make sure to put dielectric grease on all the electrical contacts points as well. A good see of wires should have some injected into each boot, but its always safe to have extra.

Venom
And be sure to pull the negative terminal Whats the fun in that?
Night Fury
And be sure to pull the negative terminal Whats the fun in that? I didn't pull it, and didn't get shocked till the last coil!
z34mightymachine
Ok thanks I will make sure to unplug the negative. Thanks!!! Napa they cost $39.96 each with a 90 day warranty or $89.96 for a 1 year warranty. I'm wondering if I should try the scrap yard as I did for my Z24 cavalier and It was good I never had an issue with it again.
5speedz34
Go on Ebay, you can find OEM low mileage coilpacks and ICM's complete. I bought a set with 50k on it for $30.
jeremy
you should relocate them at the same time you are replacing too, IMHO

Advance Auto stocks AC Delco(OEM) coils for $55/each with a 1 year warranty. Oreilly has the same ones for $53/each(they have to order them though). Oreilly even carries some cheapo $20/each coils with a 1 year warranty. I'm not sure how good those "master pro" coils are as I've never used them. They do have the same 1yr warranty the Delco's carry. For what it's worth, I have over a quarter million miles on a set of original AC Delco's(and they're 15 years old). 5speedz34
you should relocate them at the same time you are replacing too, IMHO Relocating them is a big of a project for a novice. Extending wires, soldering, not to mention your plug wires being long as shit afterwards. I'm really not sold on the whole relocating them, other than the fact that it makes them easier to get to. z34mightymachine
Ebay sounds like a good idea. I have bought some much things of ebay for my daily driver which is a Ford Focus ZTS. I'm aware of Oreilly but In Montreal Canada I don't believe we have them here. Relocate them sounds like a good idea as I have seen some of the 3.4 engines have them located close to the map sensor. Is this really a big job?
z34mightymachine
Ok went on ebay and I found all 3 coils for $30.00. It only has 60,000 miles on it. I will buy these tonight. I should have them Next week. I will let you guys know how it turns out. I'm so happy I have my Father in-law to help me as he does his own mechanic work!!! z34mightymachine
Well did some more checking and found out that the ignition coils are very good. But it has a tapping noise which I might think good be a valve in the head that is loose. I have a good mechanic who is used to the 3.4 engine as he has fixed a lot of them because a lot of his clients are taxi drivers in Montreal that drive a lot of w bodies. I let everyone know what is the tapping noise.
