grandprixnyc
Just as I had suspected.... the coolant system went out today.... I just got in, pulled into the driveway, and coolant was spewing everywhere , puddles all over the driveway. Looks like its coming from the bottom of the radiator. Add this to the brakes/axle work that needs to be done... I just can't logistically put this kind of time/.effort/money into a 16 year old car. So, unless this is a minor fix, this things next stop is the jy...
grandprixnyc
Damn... wrong section.... mods move this to powertrain. Sorry...
slick
Radiator is a pretty simple fix.
grandprixnyc
I went back out there to survey the damage. Definitely coming from either the radiator or the the upper hose. The hose is tight, perhaps it has a crack, but that thing was losing coolant like no tomorrow.
grandprixnyc
And if it is the radiator... i don't even want to fix it. I'm just tired of this already. Sorry for the rant. I have to be on the train at 6:50 monday morning to get to work. And now I cant even get there. ugggggggh!
patgizz
$50 junkyard fix is worth not scrapping the car to buy a newer one with the same potential problems.
Brian P
yeah ^^ x2. If people junk cars because of reasons like that, I REALLY need to start buying cars to fix and flip.
grandprixnyc
Its not just the radiator issue, either. There is a long list of things to fix, and i'm just tired of it, you know? There are no "good" j/y's around here at all, none that have a GP of this vintage, anyway. I'm going to tinker around and see what the hell I can do with this thing. It looks to be the upper hose, but I'm going to have to start digging around to see whats up.
grandprixnyc
sorry for the rant guys... but I work 10 hour days on wall street in addition to a 4 hour round trip commute... and this was not how I was planning on having my weekend go! I don't even have the time to spend on this. I'm up the creek. I rely on this to get me to the train, too. Its just the last thing I need right now. I was just thinking to myself as I was driving earlier today, you know, I've had this car a long time now, 5 years about, and there hasn't really been any major trouble. Then I pull into the driveway, get out, and have green coolant spraying all over my white shoes. NICE.
5speedz34
Radiator's are easy to replace in these cars...
grandprixnyc
so i've been told. Its not the actual act of doing so, its the long list o grievances I have against it. I'll live. My balls are just in a vice for the next few days.
Venom
Ive been where you are right now. I know its probably not an option for you but thats why I always have a backup car just in case something like this happens now. But I also know that its not exactly feasable for some people to maintain and insure two or more vehicles. Hopefully its an easy fix. grandprixnyc
Yeah, thats my problem... no alternative. I'm SOL. I've calmed down, though. I was really pissed this afternoon over it, but whatever. It will be fixed in due time. As long as I make it to the office on time, I'm good. It kind of blindsided me, I didn't see this coming. I didn't think something that would incapacitate the car suddenly would happen. Its better that it happened now and not Monday morning, so I guess I should be thankful. I was outside today painting my fender for my car and It was coming out like shit so I took a break and decided to paint my living room instead Then Ill go back later with a clear head and start working on it again. You sound like me. My apartment looks like Greensburg twister hit here instead, and my car looks like it never sees a dirty road. Ususally, anyhow. grandprixnyc
Looks like the part is no longer available around here... so I'll be carpooling for a while.

grandprixnyc
radiator.
White93z34
ANY autoparts store (advance auto, Autozone, pepboys, murrays, carquest, etc.) should have that,
RareGMFan
No kidding. I can't fathom a radiator that commonly used amongst several different cars for several different years is discontinued. And trust me, we've all been in the same boat. It's easy to get extremely pissed off, and want to call it quits when your cars not working. Been there many, many times (only natural when everything you've driven is 12+ years old). It's amazing how quickly that turns around once you fix the immediate problems that prevent it from operating.
grandprixnyc
I was able to source one out. I'm still not thrilled over the whole process, though.
White93z34
If you are going to continue driving a 16 year old car, you gotta expect stuff to start breaking. I have a large binder of receipts to show for that.
RareGMFan
Yup. Not to mention, buying something even as new as 4 or 5 years old isn't going to elude that problem. My barely 7 year old GP needs new radiator hoses, a new MAF sensor, CPS, at least one wheel HUB, CV axl, struts/strut mounts, etc. Unless you buy something brand new, and/or under warranty, don't expect to be free of the cost or hassle of repairs. Like the saying goes, "you either pay the bank, or you pay the mechanic". And sometimes, you do both.
grandprixnyc
Oh I know. I'm just hoping to get a few more months out of it, and could finally send it to pasture by the fall.
