Gas leak...changing the gas tank?!?!?!?!

I have been smelling gas near my rear left tire lately...so I went under the car and noticed moisture on the gas tank  . I believe it is leaking very slightly to where you can't notice it as far as gas mileage. I have a '95 Cutlass and will have to change the tank (if that is the problem). How hard of a job will that be? :x Now if I took it in to a garage they would probably get there moneys worth on this job :bawl:

Yeah, a shop would have some cost. Dropping the tank isn't so bad. Draining it would be easier if it was near empty. From there, it's a step-by-step of the following:

- Disconnect the negative battery terminal (don't wanna go 'boom')

- You may wish to lower the exhaust system to give you more room by removing the rubber hangers

- Relieve the fuel pressure (take off gas cap and press the pressure release valve under the hood)

- Loosen tank straps, disconnecting the filler and vent hoses, and then the pump lines and electrical (pump lines are easier to remove with the proper tool available at pretty much any parts store)

- Exchanging the pump takes some patience, but the retainer rings holding it down aren't so bad if there's no stubborn buildup gripping it. That retainer ring could be one of a couple varieties (you'll either need to slide it until it's aligned outside of the lock tabs - or it will be a snap-ring with holes on each end that need to be brought together to reduce the size of the ring, and lift out)

- Put it all on a new tank and smile while you put it back in. There will be annoying issues with clearance, but so long as you are smiling, everything will be alright. You might grit your teeth and swear, but ... just ... keep ... smiling.

I had pinhole corrosion on a tank in my old Escort. I dropped the tank, cleaned it out, filled the holes with the epoxy resin and cloth and put it all back up after testing it with water. A week later, other pinholes formed, so I redid it only I bought a new tank. I'm just trying to say it's not worth the hastle of fixing an old tank when putting in a new one would make life easier down the road (that and it sounds good to a new buyer when re-selling it privately).

i'm not completely sure if there are any differances in gas tanks between '91 -'95, but swapping a gas tank (or fuel pump) is a real bitch. i had to pull the gas tank out of my car when my fuel pump went out a couple months ago. i would guess the leak is probably coming from one of the quick disconnect fittings (or flare fitting lines depending on year) coming out of the top of the gas tank. that or the big rubber O-ring that seals the fuel pump sender unit/pickup assembly to the gas tank. try to do the job with as little gas in the tank as possible because you can't siphon any gas out until the tank is actually out of the car. i remember when my fuel pump went out i had to get the gas tank out when it was full of gas because i couldn't siphon or pump any out  i had to buy an SUV jack and get the car really high up in the air to do the job. i basically lowered the tank down on a piece of plywood between the SUV jack. it REALLY helps to have two people at this point so that the tank stays level and balanced while it is lowered down out of the car. i did the job myself and it really sucked! getting the tank back in the car isn't as bad due to the decreased weight, but it's still tricky getting everything in the right place. again, a friend would help alot here so one person could hold the tank in place while the other puts the straps on and bolts in.

i'm not sure what a shop charges to do something like this, but it sounds like you could just drive the car until it was almost out of gas, then do the job with a friend and have job done without too much trouble. depending on mileage you may want to buy a new fuel pump while you're at it and change the filter. good luck -

Ditto to malibuolds, I dropped my gas tank and it was worse that fucking w/ my alternator. As for the puddle, smell it, you'll know then if its a gas leak or not. Good luck!

Thank You for the tips...I'm not sure if I will be capable of doing that job. I'm just getting tools slowly for these kinds of things, but always come across a couple that I don't have. Time is also an issue! I really don't want the garage to do this...it just seems that it will happen if the leak gets worst.

If theres puddles, smell them to see if they smell like gas.

Its a good possibility you have a hole in the tank if your exhaust hit it.
