CSI_MuNkY
So today I got pulled over for loud exhaust. He let me go, but told me to fix it and that he would be keeping his eyes and ears open for me. The exhaust is as follows; 2.5" pipe from DP to Y pipe, 2.25 from the Y pipe to the tips Walker Catalytic converter 12" vibrant resonator 2 Magnaflow mufflers (not sure what model) What can I do to quiet the exhaust down, but keep that sweet Magnaflow sound? I'm thinking maybe a longer resonator? Something else that may play a factor is that exhaust only comes out the passenger side outlet, however if you cover that outlet it comes out the drivers side just as easily, no explanation for it, I bought it off Matt and he says it was like that when he got it installed. I would think blockage after the Y pipe, but like I said you can make it come out the other side. Maybe if I fixed that problem and had both mufflers muffling, it would quiet down a bit? I see a LOT of cops on my way to and from work, I have no doubt in my mind I will cross his path again in the future. I was wearing my work cloths, with the company name plastered all over me, so he knows where I work. I'm going to try taking the back way, but it might take me twice as long to get to work. Thanks Jamie
AWeb80
I can't see that being loud.....what a prick
CSI_MuNkY
Yeah tell me about it... at about 2500RPM there is quite the rasp. Leaving from a traffic light I'll bet that is what he heard. Jamie
Andrew
longer resonator should help with the rasp. and is the y pipe hand made or aftermarket? but i agree with Aweb regardless.
EviLette
Agreed. Somebody pissed in his Post Toasties that morning.
draggin1969
next time this happens ask the officer to take a db reading. I have had several cars that sound like open headers on a v8. when you ask them that they say I dont have any way of doing that. then you say unless you can show me what the limit is and what it actually is then leave me alone or I will press harrasment charges on you. They WILL leave you alone.
jdcutty
lol, i ran my 3.4 cutlass for 6 months with no mufflers. only got questioned once, but i got pulled over for the radio. BTW, it sounded like complete ass. And i agree with the above statement.
xtremerevolution
wtf? Is the LQ1 that loud of a motor? I've got a 2.5" pipe going from the cat to the muffler (no resonator and stock cat) and just one magnaflow muffler...
CSI_MuNkY
They can be pretty loud engines, here is Matts Z34 with no exhaust past the down pipe. Here is what mine sounded like this weekend at the track, WOT. I still had the track numbers on the window when he pulled me over, so that might of been part of the reason I stood out to him. At any rate the wifey is all freaked out about me getting nailed for street racing (long story but they impound your car and suspend you license for 7 days, and the whole law is up to the judgment of the cop), so she is telling me to fix it... Well, being that she NEVER tells me to spend money on the car, I think I'm gonna do it, lol. The plan is; New after market SS Y pipe (the one on there was hand made) New 18"+ resonator, any suggestions? And a cut out before the cat, so when I'm at the track I can open it up and let the LQ1 breathe freely! Just thinking something like this, Not even an electric one, something I physically have to get under the car and open (I have to jack it up to put my track tires on anyways), this way if a cop questions it I can safely say there was no possible way for me to open and close it from within the car. GOT2B GM
I know of a nice y pipe with your name on it....... Popo's love that exhaust
Andrew
after listening to your exhaust in the 1/4 mile vid, that is not loud at all! i would stick with a vibrant resonator. you can get them on Ebay btw.
GOT2B GM
its louder between 2000 and 2500 rpm than it is at wot.
Euro
that sounds wicked. Pulling up the driveway...to me, it sounded DEAD on with the 03/4 cobra exhaust.
GOT2B GM
lol it was fucking loud. my neighbours were loving me that day.
CSI_MuNkY
LoL That was taken the day we swapped exhaust, he wanted quieter, I wanted louder, so we traded. When we swapped we discussed what this is, but we have no definitive answers... Matt says when he had the exhaust done it was on the OEM Lumina exhaust so he just had it swapped over. Apparently when you shake it, it sounds like there is something granular in it. Been surfing a few different websites, I have found that Jegs seems to have the best prices on stuff I'm looking for. Cut out $24.99 Magnaflow Y pipe $26.99 Thrush 25" Stainless Steel Glasspack $101.99 Total after shipping to Canada, Jegs takes care of all brokerage and crap, $214 All I need now is a set of tips I had planned on redoing the exhaust this summer anyways. Mainly to get the tips to sit in the center of the cut outs, rather than off to the sides. But also to get to the bottom of the y-pipe issue. I was also planning to use a longer resonator to get rid of the rasp... So really, this just gives me reason to justify the work I wanted to do.... BIGBULS
That is the EXACT resonator I was going to suggest............ Perforated core, straight-through, stainless and flows awesome (and is pretty cheap too). The only downside is that they DO have a stainless/fiberglass mesh packing that *may* eventually blow out. May.......
CSI_MuNkY
I think I'm gonna hold off on this for now, take a bit of a gamble. I can't afford to do it right now cause I HAVE to do brakes. My rotors sound so bad I could swear they look like this Its a gamble cause if the same cops sees me and feels like a prick I'll get a fine (that I will fight) I am taking a different way to work and have yet to see a cop that way. And no other cop has cared enough to turn around and nail me. Guess we'll see what I can afford in a few weeks... Exhaust job would give me something to do over my 1 week shut down in July Jamie
