Overheating

I'm almost certain that my car is not defying the laws of physics and either my temp sensor and/or guage is on its way out... but I wanted to run it by you guys to see what you think. This is an LQ1 FWIW.

I start my car and leave the train station... about 2 minutes later the temp guage is up to about 220 and climbing up to 260. Now I know water/coolant doesnt boil up to 260 degrees in 2 minutes... and then the guage acts irradically, dipping up and down between normal operating temp (~175) and about 250.

I had this problem last winter, and bleeding the coolant fixed the problem. Why I should have to bleed the coolant again (leak?), I don't know. I could certainly give it a shot... but what do you all think?

Sounds like it's sucking air into the system somewhere.. The gauge fluctuating would be air bubbles moving through the system.. I'm sure someone will jump in here if I'm pointing you in the wrong direction.. I'd check all the hoses for cracks, maybe check the radiator cap?

When was the last time the coolant was flushed? When was the last time anything in the cooling system was replaced? Is there coolant in the overflow?

My guess is there is a leak, but I need you to answer these first for me.

If bleeding it doesnt seem to change it, check the wiring for the sensor and make sure it hasnt shorted out on the exhaust manifold or anything.

-Coolant was flushed about 10-12,000 miles ago.

-Nothing on the system has been replaced since I have had the car, 4 yrs.

-Not sure if there is still coolant in the overflow now, but there was some a while ago.

I'm suspicious of a leak as well. Its not leaking coolant into anything that i can tell (ie headgaskets), no coolant smells or anything... most likely a hose. The coolant top off/system bleed did the trick 6 months ago... since the problem is back, my suspicions are that there is a leak somewhere.

Check your overflow. Fill it and go from there. Keep checking it periodically. If you can't find any leaks take it somewhere and get it pressure tested.

Well I checked it real quick before i left for work... the coolant was down considerably. I added some, but need to pay more attention to the issue this weekend at some point.
