60* V6 and WOT

I've heard in recent threads that the 60* V6's love WOT. Why and how so? To clean them out? Mine never gets over 15-20% throttle , it gets babied like none other  so I'm wondering why it should be floored more often than now. TIA!

The engine is designed and built to run and be run hard. Babying the car around town doesn't help anything and promotes carbon and sludge buildup inside the engine.

Another reason I baby it is because I have heard that the transmission is weak behind the DOHC (4T-60E) and only rated for 225 HP. The DOHC makes 210 HP stock so I don't beat on it for that reason also.

It has no problem putting up with 6500 RPM on a daily basis.

anything under 4 grand in a LQ1 is boring.

i take the monte to its redline almost everytime i get in it.........but sometimes you have to mash it just to keep up with other cars. but i only dirve it a few times a week, so it dont get beat on that bad.

I hit redline several times daily in my 2.8, it runs strong at 223,600 miles, burns no oil whatsoever and consistently pulls off over 30 MPG on every tank of gas. Excellent motor.

I can't remember the last time my LQ1 was redlined. It was driven daily until school let out. It hasn't been driven since the 21st of May. I'm trying to pull off the best possible gas mileage this tank. Under 2500 RPM all the time and no A/C. I wonder what it will do...It's got almost 73,000 miles.

I can't drive my car without hitting redline, I just love the sound... One thing I absolutely love about the LQ1...

But yeah, as someone else pointed out, you should at least get your RPMs up for the sake of cleaning the engine internally. Staying in the low RPMs allows carbon and other nasty shit to build up. Hitting those higher RPMs allows that carbon and sludge to be burned off.

And this is true for just about any engine, not just 60* GMs

My LQ1 LOVES WOT.. so did my 3100's and my 3.1. All I know is, after 5 or so months of driving the 4-door green GP, and then tearing down the engine, it was really clean inside... nothing wrong with a little high RPM's now and again, it's actually beneficial for the motor. Shops get cars in that have never been over 2500RPM, and they usually benefit most from seafoam.

Nothing like flooring it on a 3.1 and all you get is noise

or in my case getting that look... am I REALLY getting beat by an older Grand Prix... :P

or braking a 3800 and getting fire

At least our brakes can stop the car in a reasonable distance :nana:

FWIW............the 4T60-E was rated at 280lb/ft when it was still listed on the gmpowertrain.com website years ago.

BUT...........

It also has max shift speed ratings of:

1-2 6500rpm

2-3 6250rpm

3-4 6000rpm

So.......while it CAN take the torque, going tooooo much past the stock shiftpoints, DOES start to affect 4T60-E reliability.

Oh.............and if it counts.......

ALL of my fleet of cars see redline + on a regular basis, and the FIRST *internal* failure I have had on ANY engine was on my Prelude..........I now have a valvetrain tap that occured not too long after an extended pull, sitting at 7300ish rpm in 5th gear for 3-4 miles.

The NX was broken by my friend (2nd gear at 90mph = 11k rpm).
