AWeb80 Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 got a neighbor w/ a 95 GA w/a 3100....I know, it's not a wbody, but same motor..... I haven't looked at the car yet....we work opposite schedules. he says it is backfiring into the intake.....what would cause this?....I'm not totally sure he even knows what he is talking about. he doesn't do any reg maint. on the car.... I'm guessing plugs or wires are shot...it's a 200k mile car and probably needs seafoamed goooood cause he puts around town in it and it never gets hot long enough....probably has lots of carbon build-up and is pinging.... any thoughts? Venom Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 That's where I would start with some seafoam first and check the wires and plugs. Min was backfiring real bad last month and I found out a plug was cracked and another had a wire shorting out on a ground. Quote
Night Fury Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 Do a tune up for him and charge him like $150 Because i'm sure the difference would be intense! Quote

5speedz34 Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 3100 is a 3100 is a 3100 And a 3100 by itself isn't a W-body. Quote
Brian P Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 3100 is a 3100 is a 3100 And a 3100 by itself isn't a W-body. If we're not talking platform specific problems it doesn't matter. Other Cars is reserved for discussion that has little or nothing related to w-bodies. Quote
badassoldspower Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Backfire through the Intake is the result of an exhaust valve not opening, thus all the compression gases escape upon opening of the intake valve. Sounds like you will be dealing with an engine mechanical concern. And please for the love of god everybody quit using seafoam, that shit is junk! Quote
AWeb80 Posted June 10, 2008 Author Report Posted June 10, 2008 I SeaFoamed it and checked the coils. everything is cherry now. i think it had so much carbon in there.... Quote

badassoldspower Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 Well other than being made from complete shit, It can and will foul out spark plugs and can damage o2 Sensors I dont care what the back label says, we took apart "seafaom magic" motors at school and its not pretty. Quote
AWeb80 Posted June 22, 2008 Author Report Posted June 22, 2008 never had it foul out a plug and has always worked great for me.... Quote

Q-Ball Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 Worked great on my GP and Neon. Neon actually had a misfire. Not anymore! Quote
badassoldspower Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 Nobody understands why i am not on the board anymore? All this is why, because somebody has used something or heard about something and it supposedly works.... This forum is so full of backyard mechanics that it irritates me, disregard the fact that a few of us on here actually have a degree in the automotive industry, we must all be the stupid ones, because anytime any of us try and get on here to infrom anybody as to whats going on, and to give legitimate advice, all we do is get shot down and more or less called idiots. GutlessSupreme Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 Doesn't it tell you right on the can to change the spark plugs and oil afterwards? Anyway, first thing I thought of with intake backfire was a bad cam, just because it happened to me.. as badassoldspower said, could be a broken valve spring too, or maybe a bent pushrod. If it's an ignition problem then the timing would probably have to be off, i.e. plugs firing during the intake stroke, but I don't have much experience with this and have only seen it when trying to get the timing right on a friend's 2.4 mopar.
