rockfangd
hello my 94 cutlass is being tempermental again. When i turn or hit a bump just right i hear a clunk come from the left front, also i do not know if it is related of not but the tire must be rubbing the inner fender at the front because you can see where it has worn a nice section of it off and there is a nice hole now . I will post a picture tomorrow. I dont know what the noise may be but i dont want to lose a wheel or something being i drive in utica lol. Below is a list of things that have been replaced. Also when i heard the noise the other day i got home and picked up the front end and there was no play at all on either side. Also i have never hit anything, not even a pothole. I have never even damaged a tire lol. New tires in february tire balance and full alignment in february new tie rod ends, abs sensors, pads, rotors, and calipers in february new struts, cartridges, springs, bearings, hub assemblies, mounts in october 2007 new balljoints in april 2007. I do not overtorque my lugnuts and i checked the torque. Any ideas are highly appreciated. I do not have much money or time to replace things unnecessary lol so thats why i post. Drummer
hmmmm. could be tie rod or ball joint, my car made clunking noises when i turned my steering wheel while driving. Try wiggling your wheel side to side and see if you have any play, might be wheel bearing or subframe mount, or strut also although unlikely, but my guess is a tie rod or something on that line. rockfangd
as i stated there is no play in the front end whether on the ground or up in the air. i did a thorough shake down of the front end. I also looked at the subframe bushings and they look alright to me
ns87
Tighten the steering rack. I had a friend help me, and a center steering rack bolt was loose. It got rid about 80% of my noise. No play on the suspension when I jack up the car either
rockfangd
you are talking about the bolts that secure the rack to the subframe

I almost thought it was the strut bearings but i can turn the wheel effortlessly, everything was changed last year and all still looks really well. Turning into my driveway i hear it almost every time unless i back in
ns87
you are talking about the bolts that secure the rack to the subframe  I think so. The bolt in question is basically dead center of the subframe if you're laying under the car. I had a more knowledgeable friend help me, so I didn't tighten it. But I was under the car showing him the general area.

cutty
I am going with strut mount even though you can turn the wheel with no problems it still may be bad. I had that happen to mine a few years ago.

rockfangd
Ok so the rack appears to be tight, but i may have something that might help. my parents have a slightly steep end of their driveway and when i tried backing into the driveway tonight the rear went fine but when the front got to where it started to incline to where i had to accelerate i heard a pretty good clunk on the driver side when it went up the incline. dont know if that makes much sense but i will try lol. basically when i accelerated to back into the driveway there was a loud clunk on the left front side of the car
