EGR question

Okay, so, i have a 1994 grand prix SE 2dr, with the 3100 V6 motor with 172k miles on her.

i have installed newheadgaskets in january, and done a Catalytic Converter Delete

i have gone through 3 EGR valves since last August. The first one went bad because my Headgasket was bad, and clogged the cat, the second one went bad b/c the cat was still clogged. The third one went bad.....i dont know, it was throwing a code for "cylinode 3 failure" or something along those lines.

So what could cause this to continue to go bad? i figure with the Cat gone, it isnt sending too much exhaust (being clogged and all) and the headgasket fixed as well.

is there something i am missing? i only had to pay full price for the first one (225), and the other two have been under warranty, but i really dont like having to put a new one in every 3-4 months, it is kind of a pain...

thanks in advance!

the car runs alright, there are no misses or anything along those lines, it is mechanically sound.

yupp, passage is blocked. It needs to be cleaned about every 75,000miles.

hmmm..interesting...so how would i clean that? i havent done it ever. so i would assume that would be a good idea...

How did the first two fail? What did you find wrong with them?

Have you checked the EGR passage going thru the intake manifold?

the first two failed because they were leaking exhaust.. how do i chek the passage?

It can be done visually if it's bad or stick something thru there to see if it's blocked or not. Remove the EGR and check out the passage opposite where the exhaust pipe comes up. It can be done on the vehicle but I'd recommend taking off the manifold, or at LEAST the throttle body. some people have used a stiff wire to break up the blockage and push it out (like a wire coat hanger), others have soaked the passage with solvent until the blockage dissolves, or both... whichever. Just be sure NONE of the pieces end up going down the motor.

I just cleaned the port between the EGR and intake due to a P0401 trouble code. Prior to cleaning I found this video on Youtube

detailing how to clean the port on a 3100. My 3100 has 134,000 on it and the port was really clogged up. After cleaning the port, the SES light cleared after a few minutes of driving.
