hm, i will keep this in mind maybe for the near future. there really shoulda been 3400's in this car to begin with. im getting sick of my wimpy 3100. why would i have to swap the rear manifold? what about the front, whys it diff? then again, considering i wont be able to do all this work myself anyways its prolly not worth the 15HP.

it's not 15 hp for you, it's 25 hp and 10ish ft/lb torque. And believe me it makes a difference, hell the 00+ 3100 has 175 hp and feels a heck of a lot better than my mom's 160hp '95 3100 on the bottom end!

I have the 185 hp version of this engine, in my wifes Rendezvous. If your going to swap, go for the highest power in the various Mini-van like vehicles which include the Rendezvous,Aztec,Venture,Montana, and Silouette. The Monte carlo, Impala and GP standard engine is the 180 hp.

The Grand am has 170 or 175 with Ram Air.

They vary due to most likely the ECM programming, all the engines have the same pistons, same compression, same intake manifolds, the smaller cars might have the smaller throttle body I'm not sure

Went to GMpowertrain.com and they have a picture of the car version and the truck version of this LA1 engine. There are differences in the pics such as Pulley,alternator,A/C comp.,Intake-maybe?, no smog pump on car but trucks dont have it since 2003. I couldn't pull up the detailed changes but I don no that these changes were done just for 2003 even though no HP increase is listed for the year: Iridium spark plugs, better injectors, better WP impeller,no smog or Egr ? I forget which, different head bolts of some sort and More. Usually I can pull up the changes for this year and I did print it out.

Maybe I'll come back and add/correct any errors in my memory.

I found out the 2001 and up 3400 have twin spray injectors vs single also.

It makes its power at 5200 rpms vs 4800 for GA's They make some improvements each year. Maybe this thread should be moved to Powertrain. Gm has made a supercharged version of this and also a highly modified N/A version. I can find the links if any want them.

Here's some links to a N/A pushrod 3.4 and 1 a guy supercharged and the pic of the Grand Am SC/T concept.

Also:

"Take the 1999 ASC Pontiac Grand Am SC/T, for example, an innovative extension of the company's handsome performance sedan. This one has been given a styling treatment by supplier ASC and a power boost to 240 hp by the addition of an Eaton-Magnuson supercharger to the 3400 V6 engine. It is noteworthy as the first application of a supercharger to this engine and for its placement forward of the front cylinder bank, rather than nestled in the Vee, which requires a very long blower drive snout."
