Cam Carrier removal

OK, so I've finally gotten passed being pissed off at this car, and I'm gonna get it running again.

Some may recall that the car pitched the t-belt, and the mechanic told me I bent valves, and I was trying to decide if I should pull the heads or not. I've decided to pull the heads, as I've got a massive leak at the oil pump drive seal, so if nothing else, that will be fixed properly. I also discovered that lower intake gaskets were starting to leak, so one more issue fixed at the same time.

My question is in regards to pulling the cam carriers. It looks as though if I just pull them off, the lifters will all just drop out the bottom, so I started looking through my Haynes repair manual, and the book says to insert specific lengths of fuel line under the cams to hold the lifters up. :confused?: I'm totally not picturing what they mean by this, unless they mean to wedge the lines between the lifters to put a side load on them.

Advice please?

I definately would not be pinching lines like that. If your trying to just do a timing belt job there is a few step by step procedure lists found here, and some good ones on mymonte.com

Yeah I thought it sounded odd, which is why I was asking. Obviously I will be doing a timing job as part of this, and I've got a couple how to pages bookmarked, so I (hopefully) have that bit under control.

Anyone out there pulled heads on the LQ1 that can give me some insight on the proper way to pull the cams/carriers off?

Heres how I do it.

Have a helper with you.

Remove all the cam carrier bolts.

Slowly tilt the carrier one way just enough for 6 lifters to drop out.

Your partner can catch them as they fall out of the carrier, with their hands or a cut down shoebox/egg carton you name it.

Then slowly lift the carrier up more, and the other 6 will drop out, having your partner grab them.

As long as they dont go dropping all over the place and get damaged, you're all good.

Upon reassembly, I used a dab of synthetic grease on each lifter before sliding them into their bores.

It was thick enough to hold the lifters in bore for the couple seconds it takes to flip the carrier over and set it on the head.

Hope that helps.

Now that sounds like a plan! I just didn't want any nasty surprises, or to rush headlong into something that would be a royal mess to get out of.

This kinda seems like another case of "what were they thinking when they designed this" to me. Gotta love the LQ1
