my dad being the great mechanic he is tried taking apart the 5 speed that we got from the j/y, because he was wondering why there was no tranny fluid in it. Anyway he pulled the case up and it got only a little way and stopped and he couldn't pull anymore, so he tried putting it back and now it won't go back down. Has anyone ever tried taking one apart? Thanks.

Post on 60degreeV6.com or Fiero.nl. I think there is a guy on the Chrysler forums that has taken on apart.

No one on here has, I'm pretty sure you need a special jig to do it.

A lot of jy, to meet EPA restrictions/regulations, have to "properly" remove and dispose of oil, trans fluid, etc. I did not known this until I bought a 5spd for my Protege, and noticed all three of the donor cars I was considering had loose drain plugs on the trans and no fluids.

Yeah i knew that, but too bad my dad didn't know that.

I have heard that you need a jig to rebuild that tranny as well. For this reason it is very costly to have them rebuilt, very few paces have a jig to do the job. I've also heard that Getrag is no longer rebuilding them, dunno how much truth there is to that though.

I have never had one apart myself but i've read a few write ups on how to do it.

if you look on the inside where the throw out bearing and such is mounted there should be a black plastic circle about 3 or 4 inches in diameter, it is a plastic cover, remove it. its hard to do without breaking but the are cheap. there is some things under that cover you need to remove i forget exactly what it was, something to do with the shifter mechanism that has to be removed in order to take apart the trans. I remember seeing pictures and it was pretty obvious once the cover is off.

After that you can undo the casing bolts and pull it apart. I'll see if i can find the write up for you.

Heres one and another

the first one is probly the best but i gave you both to keep you busy and incase the first one left anything out. I havent read through them in a while.

Those links are for a 282, but the 284 does have the same shift-detent cover so maybe it's the same underneath.

Similar but they are still very different transmissions.

The jig you are refering to is just a holding fixture to make it easier to work on........its nice, but not needed.
