Venom
Alright, so this is bugging the hell out of me. 95 CS 3100 Auto. Ever since Iveo wned the car the temo gauge did not work. There is an aftermarket one wired in, but now Im trying to eliminate it. So I went looking for the switch on the back head and cant find it. I asked around and a few people told me it was under the EGR valve area. Some told me to follow the wiring. So I did and I found the wire, but its melted at the the connector, and the wiring to the switch is missing. So here I am still staring at the back head of my motor trying to find the damn switch. Does anyone have a picture of the location or maybe a more detailed desc of where to look? TIA
Crazy K
whats the possibility you have a 96+ engine in the car? the very far drivers side top end of the head is where the temp sensor would be, on a little flat spot like a triangle. I believe the 96+ heads have the triangle but it has no hole tapped into it.

19Cutlass94
96+ heads have NO provision for the single wire temp gauge in the rear head. If your PCM temp sensor ( located below the TB ) is only a 2-wire sensor, then you have a single wire somewhere. Ive learned that most shops that put them in, will put them in the block where the coolant drain plugs are. The stock location for it is right behind the EGR valve, almost on top of the head, to the right of the coils/ICM. If the sender is not there, then the head has to have a plug in it. Check there first. it should be a single green wire.

When I had the transmission replaced they found out it was a 95 drivetrain from the factory because a 94 trans mounts different then a 95. Plus the code came up as a 95. Build date was June or July and they were already using 95 parts.

I had a 95 grand am that was the same way, I couldnt find the switch on the back head. But the difference is that on this car I did find the connector, although its melted, but cant seem to find the temp. It doesnt look like the engine has been replaced, but it is possible. I looked everywhere in there for that plug but still cant find it. My other thought is, If I take the wire from the aftermarket gauge and tap it into the factory wiring, would it still work. Or how about if I just buy a new temp switch and install it in where the aftermarket sender is currently installed?
w-bodys_are_the_best
I would just replace it, I think mine was under $
Venom
Spent some more time looking and still nothing. Here is the wire I found though, definately for the switch: The more and more I think about it, I think Im just going to install a new sensor down where the aftermarket one is installed and run a new wire. I want to eliminate the sensor being bad before I buy a new cluster or track down the wiring.
19Cutlass94
Convert to the 3-wire sensor.
Venom
Convert to the 3-wire sensor. I thought about that too. If I switch to the three wire, I would just run the third wire to the existing wire correct?

I will have to look, but I am pretty sure I still have a brand new 3 wire temp sensor in my spare parts box in my garage..
Venom
Yeah if yours is yellow, black, and purple wires it should be the same, someone else should be able to chime in and confirm it.
BXX
Actually, im about to go outside for a smoke, so I will check
19Cutlass94
I did this on my 3400 when I swapped it in. All you do is match up the two wires ( yellow and black ) and the third wire ( will be on top by itself ) will be the green wire for the single gauge sender.
