3.4 DOHC Starter Removal

I did a search and came up with nothing, and the W-body Haynes book sucks because it's covering too many years and doesn't get specific enough. I need to pick up my garage light I couldn't see anything in there today. I gotta remove the filter, and there is a rubber line, from what I gather it goes to an oil cooler? I'm going to tackle this in the morning but would like some tips/info about it.

you gotta remove the oil filter to get that massive starter out, and with some swearing yelling and overall fun it will come out. I just had to play that game. thank god for 3x00 starters!

when i did my starter i was able to get it around all that stuff. it's kinda hard but can be done. all i did was remove the filter.

x2.

Thats exactly how I did it. If I ever have to do it again (which I hope I don't) I'll get a 3400 starter. :high5:

i've never removed a line, hose, or filter to do a starter on any w-body including a TGP and 3.4 with oil coolers. once it is unbolted rotate the top toward front of car to get the solenoid clear of everything then you can wiggle the back end of the starter out and get easy access to the wires.

I've done the starters on my 94 and 96 clutlass's and my brother's 94, but they were all 3100's and were easy, this looks like it won't move back even 1/4 inch without pulling the oil cooler line.

You should be able to get it out around the cooler line, it just takes a bit of persuasion. After I removed the oil filter, I was able to flex the cooler line enough to get the starter around it and it finally dropped out the bottom. Getting the new one in though was a royal pain though, which is why I would recommend the 3400 starter. I just wish I had known about it when I went to do the job

I dunno about the 3100 starter though, so I can't help you there. Also, I don't doubt that Pat is right, as there are so mnay ways you can twist, rotate and wedge that starter to try to get it out. I just gave up trying to find that way since it's so easy to pull the oil filter.

I was looking, I got a spare 3.4 starter with the motor parts he gave me, I'm going to compare it with the 3100 starter, but the 3100 starter will work if it's smaller? If not, I might check around for a newer 3400 starter. I haven't done anything yet  being lazy and I gota do some running around, I might pull it out of there later tonight. here is a pic, the back of the starter on the right, and that line, which just loops back around to the block, doesn't make any sense unless there's suppose to be an oil cooler, and mine doesn't have it.

You should be able to use the 3100 starter, however even the 1994 3100 starter is a freaking beast. Get a newer 3400 one. Its much smaller and will be easier to work with.
