xtremerevolution
So I seafoamed the Regal the other week, and noticed I had an exhaust leak because I had smoke coming out of 3 places in my engine bay. Those 3 places were where the headers connect to the exhaust pipe, and that stupid little cylinder-type thing that has a small hose going into the front header. I had to remove that and bend that hose when I replaced the strut tower mount bracket that bolts onto the engine block, so I'm sure that had something to do with it. The whole damn thing is practically rusted over. What in the world is it there for anyway? This is an old pic, but its the cylinder thing directly to the right of the middle of the dogbone mount. http://s16.photobucket.com/albums/b37/SirMaverick00/95%20Buick%20Regal/?action=view¤t=IMG_3178.jpg How do I fix these two issues, and how much will it cost me? Better yet, what consequences do I suffer if I don't fix them? They're not very big leaks, but they're certainly visible.
Crazy K
you are talking about the EGR and/or it's pipe. I would fix them before they get worse. I looked at a 95 or 96 regal that sounded like it had a bad flowmaster under the hood. yeah... that would be some really overlooked and ignored exhaust leaking. I'm pretty sure its the EGR gasket that connects to the pipe. I had to remove that when I changed my mount and the gasket crumbled away. The engine did sound slightly different afterward, but I since I had also put in poly bushings at the same time, I figured it was just the vibration of the engine going into the frame of the car making that noise. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what the problem is. What does that EGR do anyway? And can I get those gaskets? Or would I be better off just picking up a unit from a junkyard motor? And what do I do about the leaks between the headers and the exhaust pipe?
Crazy K
LOL! the EGR gasket is like $2. get one at any parts store. the other things... hmm. you could regasket everything. a common gasket that is overlooked is the downpipe donut, this gets worn constantly with movement of the engine and exhaust. any leaking from there? I would say start with the EGR first... then let us know whats up.

I'd imagine the downpipe donut would be worn because for some reason, the mods I've done to the car had me ripping through rubber dogbone bushings every 6 months. The 3800 does have more torque than the LQ1, and uses only one dogbone mount instead of two. While breaking those mounts, the engine had a lot of play and probably rubbed its way to a downpipe donut leak. I'll pick up an EGR gasket first. God knows after 179,000 miles, it would need to be replaced.
Brian P
The LQ1 also has a different bottom-mount setup that supports the engine much better, don't forget.

I guess nobody in GM's engineering team back then really thought someone would be driving a 3800 Series 1 the way I do.
