chadz34
Well the car is at the transmission shop, I decided to go down and take some pictures. I thought it was pretty cool, I asked Jason (the remover of the trans) how the job was, he said it was a pain in the ass with 3.4 DOHC powered cars everything is in the wrong spot, but he got it out in not too bad of time! Now it spends a few hours on the bench recieving a new torque converter (culprit), master overhaul kit, 4th clutch hub assembly, accumulator pistons, TCC solenoid, SONNAX update kit for valve body, reverse band, rev reaction shell and I tihnk that does it lol. GP1138
I love how they put your subframe on your alloy wheels. Probably scratched the shit out of them.
chadz34
I love how they put your subframe on your alloy wheels. Probably scratched the shit out of them. I'll probably make a scene about that, they arent i the best shape as it is, they are the worst part of the car. I wouldnt mind a different set of factory rims... Andrew
i would replace the mounts and bushings while you are there.

He's full of shit. It's not any more difficult than say a 3100 or 3800. All the bolts are in the same place.

5speedz34
i would replace the mounts and bushings while you are there. Mounts bushings. Engine mounts/trans mounts. Oil pan gasket. Alt.

dohc v6
Yeah, no matter the sahpe of your wheels, thats not right. People are so fuckin dumb. The trans is not hard to take out, I mean I took mine out the top, for crying-out-loud they have a lift. People are just lazy. One thing I would make sure is that they use all the factory bolts, especially on the tranny pan. The bolts on the tranny pan are a special sealing bolt, 2.25 a piece. It doesnt matter what shape theyre in, they shouldnt have laid the subframe on your wheels like that.
chadz34
I called down there and he said the frame was sitting on trie rubber only, there are no marks in my rims, thank god. Anyways the new trans is it. It feels nice, it shifts tighter, moves easier lol and I feel like Im able to control my speed alot better. And my torque converter actually works properly now hahaha. I'm getting some paint work done on Monday I'll have some before and afte rpics.
White93z34
Oh really? I have torn down my fair share of these cars, 3.1s, 3800s, and my fair share of 3.4 DOHCs. and whatever else in between this may surprise you but to remove a transmission from a 3800 you have to remove the crossover too, even saying that removing the crossover is a "daunting task" is silly, Literally a 10 minute job provided no bolts break. yeah that rear bolt kinda sucks, but the 3800s have one thats just as bad, and once you do it a few times it is cake to get at. it doesn't matter what your doing. everything with 3.4 cars is difficult. claiming his mechanic is full of shit, you obviously dont know. Do you know?? Let me see I'll do a complete intake gasket job on a 3.4 8 days a week before I would touch a 3800s intake gasket set yeah the crank sensor on automatic 3.4 cars sucks, but IMO not much worse then busting out the harmonic balancer puller to change one on my 3800 Let me tell you how bad it sucks to change the power steering pump on a 3800 too, I sure Love my top mounted pump on my 3.4 For what it is worth there is a write up that another member did here about changing the alternator in under an hour. Now here is where someone will whine about the TIMING BELT!!!, been there done that. Fact of life with older OHC engines, I'll take my 3.4s any day over older Honda and imports that have almost a 100% chance of smashing valves if the belt breaks while the engine is running. That said, yes, I DO know, I am in the midst of changing a transmission on a Buick Regal right now, no worse then when I put a transmission in my z34 last summer. When It comes to transmission service in these cars it is all about the same give or take.
1990lumina
Worst part about any transmission from any automatic transmission in my experience is lining up the torque converter when installing the new tranny. Must take some experience to do it fast because I always struggle with that part.
digitaloutsider
you obviously dont know. I've worked on more LQ1s than you've driven, and personally I don't give a shit about your two-bit n00b advice. Unless you're some sort of shit mechanic with little technical knowledge (which is pretty obvious by looking at exhibit A, posted below), the LQ1 is FAR from a bitch to work on, and I'd rather work on my LQ1 than my L67 any day of the week. Exhibit A: you must remove the exhaust crossover... thats a daunting task in it's self. Yeah. That exhaust crossover is real daunting. I damn near shit myself when I saw that I had to take out four whole bolts.
