ECU.... and another Q

I don't really understand too much about these. But, one of my friends was telling me I should get one. So, I decided to ask you guys about it. I just wanna know what ECU really does to the car, I just understand that they upgrade the computers in the car. I got a '94 Grand Prix SE 3.1 L. just so you know My other Q is.. I installed a custom Cold Air Intake on my car myself... But for some reason it is having a problem reving past 4000 RPM (sometimes)... I haven't put my MAF sensor into the intake yet.. could that be the reason? Before hand I would be able to red line it usually. Thanks for any input you have.

is that in neutral? because if your trying to rev it higher in neutral you cant, there is a rev limiter, it sounds like a chugging kindof, yeah thats your rev limiter

TapocoL, welcome aboard!

PhantomFE3 is right on your reving limitations; the Neutral Switch on your gear selector give a signal to the Electronic Control Module (ECM) and the ECM kills fuel delivery to the fuel injectors. It not recommended to do such a thing on your engine. However you can over-ride that 'command' by getting a new MEMCAL computer chip if you have the 3.1L MPFI V6. Details if needed on that if your car has that motor.

As for your Electronic Control Unit (ECU) question: since the 1980's mainly all passenger cars + trucks are running electronic fuel injection and the ECM (ECU is not really used) controls fuel management, emissions adjustment calculations and other drivability issues.

So, to get enhanced performance is based on the car / drivetrain you have. If you have the Multi Port Fuel Injection (MPFI) motor, and OBDI dignostic system you can swap out a re-programmed MEMCAL chip from a couple of companies. If it's a Sequental Fuel Injection (SFI) motor, than that has the OBDII system and cannot be upgrades since there is "removable" chip. Every component is sodered in and the running program is "flashed" and cannot be modified.

Ton of information right? Feel free to ask questions if you're confused. Again, glad you joined and hopefully we'll get you running top notch on your Grand Prix! :D

If its a 94 Prix, then it has the 3100, and therefore you cant do the chip upgrade, like Redfox said. And, you need to get that MAF sensor back in place, ASAP

Has anyone every tried to flash there OBD II computer with a powerprogramer just to do stuff like top end limiter, revlimiter?

You find the software, the port, and a system that doesn't reject it and I'll show you some impressive tricks.

No, not at this time, there is no programming tools to update your OBDII.

The joys off owning a newer vehicle... sometimes older is better.
