LQ1 Questions

GP1138

Recommended Posts

I've done some extensive searching, and after a few dead-ends on Ben's site, I decided to just post here and get some current info.

I'm thinking of picking up a decent looking '96 GP around here with the 3.4L and a blown belt. I know the '96 is an improved motor, but should I be worried about the belt replacement? Is there anything easier or different than on Ben's writeup here: http://60degreev6.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24974

Also, where can I obtain hold-down tools? I see Ben is not selling them anymore.

With owning both early and late models of the LQ1, I am going to say the 95+ engines are way more problem prone. The earlier models are easier to fix and have less problems, also the 96 and 97 engines are considered ''interference'', yet there haven't really been any cases where it has been damaged.

I would disagree with this statement

x2... Just the fact that you don't need gear pullers to pull the new cams off make me want a newer LQ1...

The 96' belt replacement should be identical to a 94,95 belt replacement. But remember the 96,97 belt is different then the 91-95 timing belt.

I have also heard that the 96+ engine is interference, but who knows. throw a belt on her and let it rip!

d2 they are 5nerference.. cant get 0y 97 eng5ne 6t t64ch the va3ves.. t662 the Tbe3t 6ff and everyth5ng.

I consider myself l33t and I can't even decipher that. He must be crunk.

Best guess: "They are interference - I can't get my '97 to touch the valves - took the T-belt off and everything."

I say buy the 96, and put 3.73's in it along with a DHP Powertunr.

Right there you have an easy low 15 second car and tons of oportunity to fuck around with stuff (via the Powertunr).

Hell, I'd buy a 96 just for THAT reason (if I HAD to have an auto).

96-97 cam cogs have more teeth and the cams have a different profile

94-97 don't use lock rings on the cam cogs (mentioned before)

96-97 have slightly different timing (i forget which side it is, but one is either advanced or retarded)

timing should be the same except you'll need a different belt

i would make your own hold-down tools to hold one cam at a time and change the cam timing

Unless it's super easy to do the 6/6 timing, I'm not changing stock timing... just too many variables, and I want a running car, I don't trust myself not to fuck it up.

Thanks for the info, everyone.
