AWeb80 Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 ok, i'm not really that incompetent.....but my main question is how to flush out the coolant out of the block....is there a block plug somewhere? the more I think about it, I might as well just replace my thermostat too....it is the stock one at 125k miles...... what is the best way to make sure that everything is flushed out of the block so goo doesn't form in a few months Quote
DOHCRagtopguy Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 I would just continually rinse and dump with water, use a glass jar to catch the coolant as it comes out of the block hose to see when it is relatively clear. That should be good enough. I know the old Chevy smallblocks had plugs on them, don't know about these newer engines. Quote
slick Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 Pull upper and lower hoses. Turn on the hose, and spray into the upper hose and into the thermostat housing, and let drain. Then, spray into the lower coolant hose and into the block, and let drain. Do it both ways a few times. Quote
AWeb80 Posted April 25, 2008 Author Report Posted April 25, 2008 what is the stock temp of thermostat for 3100? 185*? Quote
slick Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 IIRC 195*. Why are you switching from Dexcool? Quote
AWeb80 Posted April 25, 2008 Author Report Posted April 25, 2008 I need to put new coolant in, and figured I'd switch... Quote
White93z34 Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 honestly dexcool is a very good coolant despite its horrid rap that surrounds it. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 Agreed. If it came with Dexcool, leave it in. There's no reason to switch. Quote
AWeb80 Posted April 25, 2008 Author Report Posted April 25, 2008 ok still gonna do my thermostat Quote
gpchris Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 Its summer use water with purple ice. Quote
CSI_MuNkY Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 what is purple ice? Its an additive made by the makers of Royal Purple... Purple Ice is a high performance, synthetic, radiator coolant additive. It reduces engine heat by reducing the surface tension of the radiator fluids for improved heat transfer. Purple Ice also helps to prevent the formation of scale deposits in the radiator for optimum coolant flow, and it lubricates the water pump seals. Purple Ice should always be used in conjunction with antifreeze in regions where freezing temperatures occur. Purple Ice is compatible with traditional ethylene glycol antifreeze (green) and GM Dex-Cool® antifreeze. Jamie Quote
Regal_GS_1989 Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 FWIW, the old 3.1 that i tore down had a coolant drain plug on the front and rear cylinder banks. It looked like a little, square head bolt, i think about an 11 or 12 mm. I'm assuming that the 3100's still had this. Quote
BIGBULS Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 Its summer use water with purple ice. No no NO! Have any of you guys seen how retardedly FAST corrosion forms in a STRAIGHT water system???? I'm talking like HOURS of use on an engine with an iron block (like an L82). Straight water is for RACE cars only........ I am NOT saying that Purple Ice is bad (it's pretty much the same as Redline Water Wetter), but there is a REASON for running a 50/50 mix of coolant and water Quote
Psych0matt Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 hmmm, I need to add some green to the TGP then was running water for the week to try and flush stuff out Quote
ZoomZoomFan Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 Agreed. If it came with Dexcool, leave it in. There's no reason to switch. That's why I put new DexCool back in mine when I did a coolant flush last summer. Quote
88red4cyl Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 I think I am gonna switch back to Dexcool when I flush the 99 in the next couple weeks.. Only the stuff from the Gm dealership though, right? I've heard the Prestone Dexcool was crappy.. Quote
mediabandit Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 i just replaced the rad on my Z34 and i flushed the whole system at the same time and replaced it all with dexcool again too. Quote

Ive been using water/purple ice for some time now. Water is always crystal clear. Oh and the reason why you run a 50/50 mix is so it doesnt freeze in the winter!! lol Quote
ismellrealbad Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 I like to be cool and use distilled water. Makes me feel all tingly inside when I'm done Quote
MonteCarloDude Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 I like to be cool and use distilled water. Makes me feel all tingly inside when I'm done i just put death-cool back in mine. Quote
ZoomZoomFan Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 I used the Prestone DexCool from AutoZone. It seems to be doing fine after a year. Quote
Venom Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 I like to be cool and use distilled water. Makes me feel all tingly inside when I'm done Thats what I used to run in my old 87 IROC I once had. Never really had a problem either. Quote
ismellrealbad Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 I am of course talking about using the ditstilled water as part of my water/coolant mixture. not just all water. Quote
5speedz34 Posted April 27, 2008 Report Posted April 27, 2008 I'm confused. Adam, why is Dex-cool in your car? Dex-cool didn't come out till '95 or '96. Why are people putting Dex-cool in older cars? There are no advantages to it. I would just put what it had from the factory. Quote
