Gates timing belt

Has anyone used the Gates timing belt kit? I want the ACDelco kit, but it's a non-stock item and could be delayed for up to 12 days. It's $113 on rockauto, or $127 for the ACDelco kit on Rockauto. I've dealt with rockauto about 2 months ago, when I ordered KYB GR2 struts and shocks for my Z24 Cav, they are awesome by the way. Rockauto's shipping is lame, one of my struts' shipping straps busted and it was poking through the box, and they had no packaging material, just threw the shit in the box, but oh well, none of it was damaged, and for the price, I'll let them slip on their shipping methods a bit.

I'm just wondering which one I should get more than likely I won't get to it until the AC's would arrive anyways, but I'd like to get this project moving . I'm ordereing it tonight, thanks.

[/quote']FYI this is KYB's fault, not Rockauto. KYB is infamous for terrible packaging. When i ordered my kyb's from ZZP the same thing happened.

Glad I happened upon this thread... I'll definately be ordering the Gates kit for my car.

Have not dealt with these guys yet, but here are the cam tools. Check out the related tools to the bottom of the page as well. I hope to be ordering these within a couple days.

After reading around a bit, I might try to just make some, I searched, and a lot of people on here, and even the guy at autozone said to make them, said he made his own for his contour, he could even draw it up how he made it he says. No parts stores around here loan out cam tools for the 3.4

:EDIT: Rochester has them at Advance he said $90 to rent, but you get that back.

I found out Rockauto has a warehouse in Mason City which is 25 min. from here. I ordered the belt at 10 pm Wed. night before work, and just got it at like 8:30 this morning, very good to know for future orders :thumb:

  • 2 months later...

Hey, sorry to bring back this old post, I bought the Gates timing belt kit, got the motor out and have yet to put the belt on the other motor. I just wanted to say if any of you read my reply to the "what do you do" thread, I am a mechanic at a textile mill. We make socks there for Carhart, LL Bean, The North Face, Walking Company, Cabella's, many other brands I'm probably forgetting, and we make them for most stores, and also sell them in our own name Fox River. I am a mechanic there and keep the knitting machines up and running and making socks. I work on the newest ones there, they are $30,000 Italian-made machines, and I noticed all of our belts (main drive, and various belts that keep components of the machines timed) are all Gates belts. I think if Gates is good enough for industrial use, it's good enough for my LQ1  I'm glad I bought the Gates kit.

On a side note, does anyone have a diagram or anything of how to make a cam hold down tool from angle iron? I know most people go that route. I'm going to just try to make one by trial and error if nobody has a diagram.
