mediabandit
Before i put the car in storage this winter,my rad was leaking up by the filler neck (not gonna jbweld/ghetto fix it), so i went out and bought a brand new one when i got it home and took it out of the box i noticed that it had the oilcooler plugs on both sides of it. My question is, will it matter? it is the correct rad for this car, but for some reason it has both sides setup for the cooler. i just want to make sure before i put it in tomorrow morning when i get home from work. i have attached a couple pics so you can see what i am talking about. Juat as a side note.....WooooHooooo!! i get to put her back on the road next weekend, the weather is finally nice enough. i am sooooo sick of driving the freakin Neon. 5speedz34
No it shouldn't matter. I replaced a radiator in the '94 a little over a year ago, it didn't have the extra coolers. Just make sure the fans mount the same way, the ones on the radiator I bought have some goofy, shitty setup that drives me nuts. I've heard that MC's got larger radiators. I know the one I bought was actually smaller. Just make sure its the same dimensions and you'll be fine.
Crazy K
the one of the d/s of the rad is for an oil cooler, I have learned. no need to hook it up, keep the lines they way they are for the tranny going to the tranny cooler.
5speedz34
What?
Crazy K
the one of the drivers side of the rad is for an oil cooler. the passenger side is the transmission cooler.

Crazy K
What cars got oil coolers in the radiator? uncertain. seems that some 94+ lq1 cars might.... I need to do more research on this myself.
5speedz34
HMM. I remember you/3100mpfi posting about this. I've never seen an external oil cooler on a LQ1 car myself. And the GP had a trailer package on it at one time, but I don't think its factory.
mediabandit
ok good to know it will work fine then. thanks. i will be putting it in tomorrow morning when i get home from work. hopefully nothing goes wrong and it is a nice quick install. the old one is already out as you saw. so it should go pretty quick. as far as the filling process.... fill rad to neck, fill bottle to full mark, replace cap on bottle, leave cap off rad, run car, add fluid until full again, replace cap? that the way it goes? just to be sure. thanks
5speedz34
Open bleeders. Fill rad as far as it goes. Start car. Run car till coolant comes out of bleeders, and till the T-stat opens up. Top off radiator. Shut car off, fill coolant reservoir. Watch coolant reservoir over the coming days.

mfewtrail
Just leave the plugs in on the opposite side/cooler that you don't need and install it. The aftermarket radiator I put in my '93 Grand Prix back in 2002 or 2003 had the oil cooler on it. By the way, you might want to save the old radiator if you have any radiator shops nearby. They can usually replace the plastic end tanks for you at a reasonable price.
5speedz34
Ya, I thought about getting the old one rebuilt, but I kinda said fuck it. And I did!
White93z34
I always thought the 3 speed automatics used the cooler on the drivers side of the rad, and the 4 speed automatic cars used the one on the passenger side?
mfewtrail
I always thought the 3 speed automatics used the cooler on the drivers side of the rad, and the 4 speed automatic cars used the one on the passenger side? Now that you mention that, I believe that's why they're there. I seem to remember the fittings on my radiator being identical in size anyways. I know on radiators with actual oil coolers, the fittings are typically different compared to the trans cooler ones.
5speedz34
Mfewtrail, have you ever seen these cars with the oil coolers?
mfewtrail
Mfewtrail, have you ever seen these cars with the oil coolers? I don't recall seeing any with radiator oil coolers, but I have seen the factory oil coolers that are where the oil filter goes(like in my TGPs). joey b
My 92 had an oil cooler stock. Ran from the filter housing to the radiator. I figured it was standard on 91-93 LQ1s.
5speedz34
Are you sure? The only oil coolers 3.4's had where sandwhich style coolers with hoses running from the water pump area.
White93z34
he is probably thinking of the cooler hoses that pump coolant through it.
ismellrealbad
If you also notice we have a very primitive and shitty version of a ps cooler...at least my 3100 did.
mediabandit
well the rad is in and working great. only problem was once i put the new one in and hooked up that cooler line and started the car, tranny fluid starting spraying everywhere. the line busted right in the bend where it comes out of the rad. i may have hit it with the secondary fan when i re-installed it, but who knows. so i took the fan back out and replaced the line. everything is working good now though.
