w-bodys_are_the_best
Hey I thought I remember reading on a thread that the dif in a 4T60 is replaceable seperate from rebuilding the trans Does this sound right? Can a 284's differential be replaced seperately, or would you have to rebuild the entire trans? I've never dealt with one, and if I can find a diff for it, I am thinking about tearing it apart myself and replacing it if that is even possible. My plan is since I have to pull the motor from my 91, now I'm thinking to pull both the trans and motor, swap slave cylinders, and throw my 91's 284 into the 92 I'm looking at buying that has the bown diff. The 92 could be up and running, and the motor I have for the 91 could maybe sit out for awhile, it would be a good time to possibly mod the LQ1 for my 91, and put it back together later. digitaloutsider
Ignore this post, I was thinking about the wrong transmission.
BIGBULS
Differentials are differentials, they have nothing to do with the transmission's internals. That being said, a grenading differential can occasionally take the entire transmission with it, so I'd make sure that it was only the differential that failed. Actually, in this case (and for the vast majority of manual transaxles), that is NOT true. The only way to change gear ratios on a 284 (or 282 etc) is to swap both the ring gear AND the output shaft.............which means you are ALSO pressing on all the gears/synchros etc from the old shaft. Even just a diff replacement still requires splitting the case. Not to mention that a differential replacement is NOT something a beginner or backyard mechanic should ever even think of doing. Get the number of shims wrong and the diff will go BOOM within 5 miles (and usually within a couple hundred feet).
digitaloutsider
You know, I was thinking about this today. When we did the 284 swap, I was looking at a differential we had sitting around, and it clicked in my head: "How could the differential have been in my hands when the 284's isn't even accessible?" I was thinking of the 4T60's differential I was playing with. You're exactly right and I do know better. Sorry about my lapse in judgement! 5speedz34
If you're serious about buying a 284 car with a bad differential, go buy a good used 284.
w-bodys_are_the_best
The guy I called that does transmission work is very very good at it and from what everyone tells me he really knows his shit. He is also very cheaply priced. The ony complaint I've heard from everyone I've asked is unless I don't plan on driving it for a year, I need to go over there with a case of Coors Light and help him work on it, or he'll never get around to working on it. He's going to look at it and we'll see if it will be cheaper to just get a used one.
