How can I tell if the dogbones are bad? They look good visually but one seems to move alot when putting the car in reverse? Do I just order these from Autozone and what is included? Can I do them myself? I just am getting tired of the random banging out of overdrive. If the transmission mount was bad what are the symptoms? I had a similar question a while back about the lower mounts. Thanks in advance.

When you order a new dogbone, the whole assembly is included. The bushing, the dogbone itself, everything. I believe they are $15 a dogbone. Easy to replace and well worth your time.

you can tell by having the hood open and shifting forward and back into reverse with the brakes on and if the motor moves around alot and shakes the lowers are bad.

they are always bad though. did you do the distributor gear o-ring? If not I would do that first. or it kind of defeats the purpose because oil will leak down there and ruin them for you.

dog bones are a no brainer you can rock the car forward and back with it in park and see the slop. maybe inject some vulkem in there. washers help keep the rubber from squishing out the sides.

Thanks for the replies...can I get these at autozone or go to the Dealer?

You can get them almost anywhere. They will likely be cheaper at an auto parts store though.

Why not get MRZ performance to make an application for W-Cars (of his poly torque mounts)??

I'm sure that it could get done pretty quickly, and then you guys would have something to replace the now defunct FFP goodies.

I liked my solid mount i made up for my w, but your car will vibrate at idle, do a search, I did it to my buick couple years ago.

Well I know nothing about cars but really want to learn and start doing things on my own. That said I changed the 2 front dogbones. I got them at Autozone for $20 bucks a piece no sales tax where I live. the first one was very easy but the other had the air filter blocking it. I had to jack up the motor a bit and pry the engine forward with a metal bar to get the holes to align correctly. This may be childsplay for you guys but I feel like I really accomplished something and guess what? The banging went away!!!

awsome man, what I normally do is set the parkin brake and block the tires, put the car in neutral and than put a bar in the little loop that is by the drivers side dog bone to pull the engine forward to line em up!

Good idea but my emergency brake is broken

True....I just bought a set of ramps, jack, jackstands and a thing with wheels that I lay on when I go under the car. I bought a water pump too and hope to be able to install that myself too.

lol... I like to call that a creeper... :P

water pump shouldnt be too hard to do, we are talkin about the 3.1 right?... I've done a coupe of em and usually 30 min to an hour or so...

The longest part of a water pump job will be refilling/bleeding the coolant. 3.1's probably have some of the most easily accessible accessories ever lol.

was the car on flat ground? all you have to do is slowly lean and pull on the car and roll the car forward and backward until the holes line up. then slide in the bolt.

with it in park it will rock the motor.

The new dogbones were aluminum and the old ones looked to be iron? I expected to see alot of damage on the old dogbones but once off they look as good as new well to me that is?

are the bushings good and tight and not cracked? if not they aren't good...

What are the symptoms of a bad tranny mount? Shifts fine but just curious and does anybody have a picture of the bottom motor mount because I am gonna attempt to replace it myself soon

Bad tranny mount symptoms:

You feel the trans slamming into reverse and shakes the car when you put the gear selector into reverse

Trans slamming into gear when put into drive.

Pretty much excessive movement shaking the car.

Cool none of those symptoms so my mounts are good. Any pics of the under car motor mounts? I checked chiltons manual but they have no info on it. I have the older manual that just covers 88-94

That was definitely the symptom of my bad mount that was completely torn in half  probably happened around the same time that the tranny gave out (at the track, before I owned it)

Fresh mount on her now, eventually poly ones up top, I'll let you know the difference, because it would SLAM into reverse before

Please anyone?

Go on TGPforums and make a topic asking "Dogbone" there. I know he has a step-by-step with pics.
