Sunbird 5 spd?

Well I was at the yard today and saw a 94 sunbird 2.0 I believe with a 5spd.. I couldn't get a good look under to find any kind of markings, would that tranny, assuming it's good, be a good idea for a swap into a W-body?

That, I believe has the Izusu tranny..........this means it's geared short(er) and the diff will go BOOM when subjected to a combo of good power and peg-leg wheelspin.

I think any 4 cyl would

Actually, I know that the OHV 2.2L's share a bellhousing with the V6's............Quads are a bunch different though.

Not sure about the 2.0 SOHC's..........

They did make sunbird GT's with a 3.1 and a 5-speed, though extremely rare, they are the same as a Z24 cav 3.1 5spd. The J-body's also got a getrag 282 with the 3.1 and 2.8 V6's, but they do not have the same mounting provisions as a W-body's 282, they will not work in a W. I have personally seen 2 Sunbird GT 3.1 5spd's. I have already done some research into this awhile back because I had gotten ahold of a j-body 282 and wanted to put it in my 96 CS. The 4 bangers (except the Quad4) got an Isuzu.

The sunbird 2.0 ohc motor has its own bellhousing seperate from the quad and the 3.1/2.2. All NA 2.0's got the isuzu but if its a turbo 5 speed bird the it has the getrag 282, but only the turbo ones.

While we're talking 5spds, what would be in a early 90's(I can't remember exactly what year it was) Grand Am with a Quad 4 HO engine? Would the internal parts of this transaxle be the same as those found in the W-body Getrag 282's?

All HOs had a 282 for a 5 speed, but their gear ratios are different (not to our benefit).

Supposed ratios are:

the std. Quad 4 box: 3.50/2.05/1.38/1.03/.81/3.61 (87-9? Olds, Buick, Pontiac, Chevy)

the HO Quad 4 box: 3.50/2.05/1.38/1.03/.81/3.94 (late '91-94 only)

I can't remember where I got that info, it might've been v6z24.com.

'91+ 282s also have a better diff (which is swappable). I don't know if any specific internal parts are different besides that, but they're all supposed to be swappable.

Thanks Manic, I should mention this is rough info from all sorts of sources that I'm still trying to sort through/verify.

So the Skylark/Sommerset never came with a Q4/Getrag? I'm pretty sure the Skyhawk 2.0T had a Getrag, but they never had Q4s I don't think.

No, the Somerset only had a 5 speed option in 1985-1987 and that was the 2.5 using an Isuzu trans. The Skylark was not offered after 1987 with a manual with 1988 being the first year to have the Q4...Even the Gran Sports were all automatics.

And you are correct that the Skyhawk was never offered with the Q4.
