Hairdo12
My cat glowed red and it wasn't clogged. I was dumping unburned fuel into the exhaust and it was being burned in the pipe. I'd pull the O2 sensor and inspent it because it is probalby burned up.
ismellrealbad
exactly. popping in the exhaust, anyways, is raw fuel detonating inside there.
CutSupreme93
thanks, the sensor that it attached to the air box?
93CutlassSupreme
thanks, the sensor that it attached to the air box? That's the Air Intake Temperature sensor. The O2 sensor is in the downpipe.
CutSupreme93
where do i access that from?
93CutlassSupreme
where do i access that from? The O2 sensor is in the exhaust downpipe after the exhaust crossover. It's a sensor sticking out of the downpipe with one or two wires running out of the end of the sensor, depending on what year car yours is. Rock the engine foreword, there's a FAQ on how to do this. Then stick your arm down there with a 7/8" IIRC wrench and check out that bad boy if you decide to do so.
CutSupreme93
thanks. would the o2 sensor cause it to die though? it has all the loss of power and the other symtoms after it warms up a little bit.
93CutlassSupreme
thanks. would the o2 sensor cause it to die though? it has all the loss of power and the other symtoms after it warms up a little bit. It could. Any SES lights?
CutSupreme93
nope, no SES light but that doesnt mean that its not the problem right?
93CutlassSupreme
I'm not sure what the problem is, I'm trying to help you. I don't know how old the O2 sensor, plugs and wires, and other stuff like that is. Is the new cat glowing red?
Pontiac6KSTEAWD
Sounds like he is going to need a complete tune up, plugs, wires, checking operation, and condition of the coils, and ignition module, O2 replacement..
Hairdo12
I'd also make sure all the spark plugs are firing. Check for broken wires and confirm the ICM and coils are working. Does the exhaust smell like gas?
5speedz34
On OBD 1. I don't think you'll get a code for a bad O2 sensor. The 94+'s went a heated O2. Then in 96 they went to a heated O2 before and after the cat. To do it on 3.4, the engine will not rock forward. Here is my advice. 1. Spray the shit out of it with PB Blaster. If the car is a little warm good. But that PB Blaster, IIRC, is flammable! 2. Get a 3/8" ratchet, a shit ton of extensions and a offset O2 socket. You can get these at most parts store. The regular O2 socket won't clear the firewall. Looks like this: 3. Give 'er hell! Mine popped loose right away. PS-I don't remember if I had the upper plenum off the car. I think I did, its MUCH easier to reach that way.
rockfangd
i would definately start with checking the plugs and wires
