shadow
Is one engine better performance wise than the other? I dont like that Dohc engines seem to need to build up rpm for decent power but turbos have lag which I have noticed NONE so far? There seems to be so many more 3.4 dohc in cars instead of turbo 3.1s? Is one easier to work on than the other? Has anyone raced one against the other? CSI_MuNkY
This past summer Matt and I raced, he had about half a second on me at the end of the quarter mile. Turbo 3.1s aren't seen as much as the LQ1 for the simple fact that not near as many were made. If your looking for an engine swap, do it right and get the best of both worlds, a turbo 3.4 DOHC Jamie
Euro
3.1 is a SHIT LOAD easier to work on than the dohc. IMO
hotrodolds
That's no opinion. That's fact. Spark plug changes are easier on the LQ1, but they aren't all that bad in a 3.1, either. Other than that, the 3.1 is easier to work on for sure.

slick
Upper and lower intake gaskets in less than 1 hour on the 3.4. Pushrod engines- 5 hours, if your damned good, otherwise 8-10+ hours.

CSI_MuNkY
NOTHING is easy about a LQ1 equipped car, even non engine parts are a bitch to replace... see my latest thread about the heater core... If its in the engine bay and you have to work on it, book a day...lol Jamie

z34Phoenix
i havent had many issues with My DOHC. very reliable. the alt is a PITA to do. but i'd rather have a alt that is a pita then the intake gaskets. the 3.1 turbo vs dohc is a pic of the lesser of two evils! both have limited aftermarket. and arent that common. like said a new 3x00 like a 3400 or 3500 is the best choice tuning will be easer and aftermarket isnt as bad. its just the 3.1 L lacks power in stock form its better to start with a more powerful engine then make it better then start with a lacking engine and then work just to match perf of some other stock motor. shadow
Ok I was just curious cause I see some many 3.4 DOHC around. I am learning new things everyday. Thanks Chris
jeremy
I really like the LQ1, and would LOVE to have a boosted one...
Euro
LQ1's aren't really "common" necessarily, but there are enough of them around to where it's not hard to find one!
CSI_MuNkY
There are always "tricks". My brother once took his Mazda MX6 to a shop to have the steering rack replaced, he was quoted for 6 hours or something like that because the frame had to be dropped. My brother said fuck that, took it home and had it done in under 2 hours, without lowering the frame at all. On top of tricks you have experience... if someones done a gasket job on a push rod engine many times, of course they are going to be faster at it.
