chadz34
I am considering a JET chip, what do you guys think or can tell me about them. Saw them on Summit.com

chadz34
DHP powertuner, or something similar. Is there something simpler to use than the powertuner?
BIGBULS
1st off, NO chips are made for ANY OBDII W car. NONE. That JET thing is probably a piggyback TPS enhancer that does NOTHING at WOT. BUY A POWERTUNR. Seriously. You can do SOOO much with them, and even if you don't gain POWER with your initial tune, anybody with half a brain can gain PERFORMANCE with a few simple tweaks to the shift tables. Seriously.............just a couple of basic shiftpoint changes can drop your 1/4 time by an easy 2 tenths with an LQ1 auto. And you can do SOOOOO much more. I love that idea now where can I find one for a 96 LQ1/auto.....
BIGBULS
Here's where my answer becomes less than encouraging: You have to find a used Powertuner setup with 96 PCM's unlocked from somebody...........maybe on Club GP or 60* forums or something. Also...........I DO know of at least 1 L Body owner who is trying to figure out what is needed to run a 97+ PCM on a 96 car AND be able to get HP Tuners support............as it stands he has a 97 Venture PCM running his Beretta, but still has not gotten a solid answer from HP Tuners........ per0781
its been mentioned in other threads to upgrade to a 97 pcm along with all the wire connections that have to be made. here http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php?topic=66861.0 and http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php?topic=55972.
z34Phoenix
swaping to a 97 pcm is a PITA a friend of mine has done it and had many issues along the way. also there are hidden tables that the powertuner cant access in the 97 DOHC pcm. these limit some of the engines potential. i have the tuner for my 96 DOHC and have made many gains. with a lot of tuning time i wrote a new Spark table Map. this map/table is far better then stock. the car actaully has a low end now! raising the shift points too had a great effect. per0781
brian has done the swap and to my knowledge doesn't have any issues.

You too eh? I just finished an aggressive timing table and it's amazing the way the engine feels now, particularly at part throttle and cruising speeds. The '97 swap was easy for me, but the guys with the DOHC have to overcome the transmission difference (is that even a problem?). The L-body guys have issues with the VATS since they don't have it, something with the ABS, and more I'm sure. If you have OBD2 emissions testing in your area, I don't know what will happen if your PCM and vehicle do not match up with regards to year and VIN stored. BIGBULS
The VATS issue is solved by using a U Van PCM..........no VATS (Venture's at least) But where the Powertuner is concerned, the 97 PCM DOES have more options, especially where the shift tables are concerned, so even with the headache, it can be better in the long run. And LQ1's aren't the only engines that can benefit from more agressive shift logic (although they get the most out of it)..........even the no-top-end L82's (3100 small port) can use an extra 200rpm or so for the 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts..........and that's STOCK..........modded cars REALLY show how crappy the stock shift logic is. z34Phoenix
custom shift tables have saved me mpg. and makes driving the car more enjoyable... but the real power and perf gain was from the new timing table and tweaking the AF with the wideband O2.
