convert your w-body to rear drive using a turbo or super charged v8?

even without turbo or a charger these cars would fly with rear drive and a v8.

maybe its just me tho....I'm a throwback kinda guy I can get use to drive a front drive v6 I'm use to punch gass sliding the rear end around..

* Been there...

* Done that...

* Bought the T-Shirt...

And went back to the drawing board due to finances and engineering problems with existing Gen I + II frames.

Rumors have been flying around that Gen III W-Bodies may be V8er's once again, but can't be confirmed by any GM representative.

Problems? Well, due to the fact that of...

* space in the engine bay (now a horizontal motor / bolted to tranny)

* the current subframe / motor mounts

* the floorboard (for the driveshaft)

* the fuel cell (needed relocated for differental)

* plus wiring of the engine sensor with ECM / PCM

* tranny linkage

* rear suspension upgrade / modifications

I don't really see why any W-Body would be a good choice for a RWD conversion.

But, if you have the patience, the moola ($$$), and the will, anything is possible. Go get 'em tiger!

And, yes, you 1992 GP is a Gen I.

Gen I:

1988 - 1996 Grand Prix

1990 - 1994 Lumina

1988 - 1996+ Cutlass

1988 - 1996 Regal

Gen 1.5:

1995 - 1999 Monte Carlo

1995 - 2000 Lumina

Gen II:

1997 - 2003 Grand Prix

2000+ Monte Carlo

1997+ Regal

2000+ Impala

1998 - 2002 Intrigue

Gen III:

2004+ Grand Prix (???)

Anyone want to clarify if the 2004 GP is a Gen v3.0?

I already new about the space and feal cell issues

but cant you solve the wireing problems buy getting the engine,harnesses,and computer all together?

wish I had the cash for this but I can come out alot cheaper by just selling my grand prix and getting a v couger or thunder bird

I believe the 04's might be listed as 3rd Gen's over at clubgp, I might go test drive one soon just to drive one...supposedly handle tons better and whatnot. Also, the gen I series w's had series I engines(3800), gen II's had series II 3800's and the 04 has a series III....so maybe that's the way it works....

The engine has nothing to do with the GEN of the body. The 04s are more like GEN 3.5s, because I'm almost positive they used the same subframe elements, and just changed the sheet metal and roofline. Kinda like what they did with the 95+ Luminas. :roll:

I actually did some research on this and here is what I found out as I recall.

You would have to do a 4 link (or similar) rear end, which with that and the fuel cell, you totally loose your trunk space. There are aftermarkey fenders and hoods made (fiberglass) for drag strip vehicles that are 12 inches longer to put the longer V8 in the engine bay. You would have to totally cut and fabricate the floor pans for the driveshaft. As well as the rear seats. Also motor mounts and tranny mounts need to be fabbed.

Est $10,000 project, if you know how to weld and do a lot of work yourself.

You can however forgo the V8 and do a 3.8 turbo and 200R4 from a Grand national, which will fit in the engine bay with out having to extend the fenders. I know cause I measured.

Gen 3.5 or Gen 2.5?

If v3.5 where was v3.0? :roll:
