Transmission Interchangeability - '93 Cutlass

Alright, this is one of those questions for a friend of a parent that you don't exactly know all the details for...you know the kind...so forgive me if I'm missing something that you need to know.

A guy that my dad works with needs a transmission for his '93 Cutlass Supreme. It's a vin T car supposedly, so it has the 3.1 in it. He's been told that the ONLY transmission that will work with his Cutlass is a 4T60E from another '93 Cutlass. Something about it's wired completely different from any other 4T60E that was made. He also said something about it having a 7 pin plug...not a 5 pin plug. Not sure what plug he's talking about though.

Now this all sounds a little off to me, but I don't know the later years of the 1st gen W-body cars that well, so I can't say for certain. It's also easier to convince someone of something when it's in writing. So is there any truth to this? Are there other transmissions that will work? Are the sensors the only difference maker?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

should be directly interchangable with all 1993 3.1 4T60e (unless this is a 3100 car???????)

94 and 95 3100 should work if the wiring, solenoids, and plug are transfered from the bad tranny to the donor, or so I have been told. this requires removing the side case cover.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have been experiencing a similar issue with my 93 cutty 3.4L.

All info that I have discovered states a 93 only trans from "any" 93 3.4L car...ie...lumina cutlass regal etc.

I could not find a JY replacement anywhere that didnt have 100K plus miles so decided to rebuild the original trans. Discovered in this process that the pump chewed itself up.

The tranny is already been rebuilt but the tranny shop has tried for 4 weeks to find a replacement pump and cant. There are no proper pumps available for my 93. It seems it is a bastard tranny . The pump has 2 switches and no air bleed valve...apparently an early limited production design.. GM stopped production of the pumps in 2005. I took it on myself to help find one.

I found one new one in russia....got no response from email. Found two new one in Kuwait...no response. I found one used one in Portland OR and currently waiting on inspection report on that one to see if its usable.

This has been very frustrating but I'm hanging in there and hoping for the best.
