SigEpCutlass Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 GM is gearing up to issue a recall for the '97-'03 Regal GS & Grand Prix GTP to prevent L67 engine fires. More information can be found here: http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61961 Quote
EviLette Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 How are there over 207,000 vehicles involved and they only claim 265 fires to date? I also like how the f.a.q. was just a cc&p of the article, broken down into smaller sections. You've gotta admire GM for their ingenuity. >.< Quote
Euro Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 no shit! Bout damn time. I was at the j/y today and saw more L36 powered cars melted than L67's.... Quote
ismellrealbad Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 FWIW someone on there was bitching about the valve covers being made of plastic. They're fiberglass, I know this because I broke one. Quote
per0781 Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 i love seeing the front of those cars all melted Quote

runt Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 They will probably do the recall, but I'd assume only on a car that hasn't had any modifications done. Quote
Brian P Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 So the L36 is exempt because the exhaust manifolds don't get hot enough this is comforting. Quote
runt Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 So the L36 is exempt because the exhaust manifolds don't get hot enough this is comforting. Yeah. Thats GREAT news! Quote
99RegalGS Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 Yum. Guess I'm taking my front wire holder off very soon! Quote
mfewtrail Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 I could have told GM that several years ago and saved them money on their investigation. I always figured it was oil igniting on the super fucking hot manifolds from the typical valve cover gasket leaks(which develop early on!). Quote
Stevo Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 Sweet jebus ... THATS what that burning smell is!!?!??!!!! I also noticed a little bit of 'wetness' in the cover area too. Time to get this checked.... wait ... no time to get this checked. I outta here in 30mins. *POOF!* Quote
White93z34 Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 I have seen quite a few toasted L36 cars myself, i'd say the ratio is about 2 L67 cars for every 1 L36 fire, however lets remember they made a TON more L36s then they did L67s. Funny how they only replace the front valve cover gasket.. Quote
ismellrealbad Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 the rear one is easier to do. u only need to remove the map bracket as opposed to the belt tensioner and mount bracket up front. Quote
jeremy Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 I got my offical letter from Pontiac advising that the recall is going to happen in today's mail. Quote
supreme_style21 Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 Holy. Some of these are 11 years old and the problem has been going on since they were made. Everyone has known this has been an issue.. so why do they feel the need to issue a recall this late in the game? I'm glad they're recalling them, but what prodded them. Quote
Garrett Powered Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 I seen that happen to my friends sisters L36 Quote

Everyone has known this has been an issue.. so why do they feel the need to issue a recall this late in the game? I'm glad they're recalling them, but what prodded them. When a problem is discovered, automakers try to prevent a recall from being issued for as long as possible, to save money and the simple fact that a recall makes a manufacturer look bad. Then, most people don't bring in 10 year old cars for recall service, saving the automaker more money. And, most 10 year old cars have had multiple owners, making it harder to track down the current owner and giving the automaker an excuse to send out less recall letters than recalled models registered. I never received a recall notice for the cradle bolts for my '88 CS, nor recall notices for the rear brake caliper sliders for my '88 CS or '93 CS. None of these recall services had been performed on either car until I did them myself BTW. Quote
GP1138 Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 I heard about this today on the radio. Quote
ZoomZoomFan Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 The L36s need to be recalled too. My friend has a '97 GP GT and I won't be surprised if it tries to cook him someday. Quote
