91-95 DOHC Headers Thread

Sup guys. It's been a while since I posted here, I know. But I thought you'd like to know that common sense finally kicked me in the junk and I have decided to not only keep the Grand Prix, but stick even more money into it!

As some of you know, I'm getting headers and a new TB to plenum pipe made for my Grand Prix. I went to the shop yesterday and they've already got the new intake pipe pretty much done and it looks awesome. I'm using a brand new 2000+ Northstar throttle body that I got off one of the 60V6 members (I forget his name, he had like 50 of them he was selling). But anyway, the shop has agreed to make more of the pipes to work with these Northstar throttle bodies for people who have the 96+ intake setup. In the end, you'll have to redo your vacuum lines to work with it, but it's a small price to pay. I'm also upgrading to an LS1 MAF that's 3.5" diameter as opposed to the old, small, and inadequate LQ1 stocker.

As for the headers, I was assured those will get made within budget and ahead of schedule. Flanges have already been mocked up, collectors are being made, and within a week the rough tacking should be complete. As for the prospect of getting more made, there is an issue. The guy who would be making th jig was not very enthusiastic about making one for something he may only make a handful of sets of a year. I told them he could expect to make maybe 6 sets a year, but apparently that's not enough. Because of this, he said he would make a jig, but it would cost something like $500-600 to make it. I think his mind can be changed, but I need a reason to change it.

So I'm asking all those who want to see this happen for two things:

1) Donate toward the cost of the jig. I want to help other members get headers, but 500-600 is more than half what I'm paying for the whole header setup. So if you want to see this happen, and could donate at least $20 toward it, it would help a great deal.

2) I need to convince him that there is a market for these headers and that people will actually buy them. If he knew he could get a bare minimum of 20 sets out of a jig he would probably be more inclined to make one. So I need commitments from you guys that if a jig is made, you will within a year order a set of headers for yourself. I'll then present the results to the guy and hopefully he'll be more inclined to make the jig and may even reduce his asking price to make one.

In the end I'm hoping that the headers and intake pipe with new TB can be sold as a package deal to really wake up these engines. We'll have to see how things go, obviously, but I'm optimistic that there's still enough enthusiasm out there for this engine to see it done. It's up to you guys whether or not you get yours.

I'm not interested as I do not have a 3.4 but something to think about Would the headers work for both auto's and manuals? If it will only work for a 5 speed 3.4, chances are slim you'll get more than a handful. If it can be made for both Auto and 5 speed, you chances greatly improve for getting them made in more quantities.

I have. And yes these haders will work for any 3.4 DOHC car regardless of tranny because I made it clear they had to follow the contour of the factory downpipe.

TTT - Where is everyone that was crying for headers? If I had some change to spare, I'd throw some money into the pot even though I don't OWN an LQ1 just to see this happen.

  • 3 months later...

I saw the headers at

http://www.milzymotorsports.com/

And they are $1000 buck$ wow! Ceramic coated and all. They are good headers, but because there is limited supply, that price is high :willynilly: Phew ... However, they are of the oval header exhaust ports that I am looking for which will fit the vintage engine '96+ DOHC 3.4 engine. These are So far the only ones I have seen. I would be willing to put some $$$ down if the price is right, and if he made the same headers to fit the 91 to 95 DOHC 3.4 engines, (all would be the same, except for the exhaust manifold flandges). He could make some up there too.

Put me down for a set. I will pay up to $400 for a set. When you get more feedback and info on the deal let me know.

If your car is a 5 speed i have equal length headers already for you! I have headers that are mandrel bent, long tube with 2.5 inch collectors to a single 3 inch exhaust. Primaries are 1 5/8". They are in good shape, and i will sell for $300 bucks! They were on my 92 lumina Z34 with a 5 speed. I have 40 hours in design and build of these. Flanges were laser cut. They are wrapped with DEI exhaust wrap.

But I need a set for a '96. I have the larger exhaust ports. If I can get flandges for teh '96 DOHC, then these would work. If I need to bend them I can do that. So what is the status of these custom headers? Do we have interest still going on to have the jig made to make up headers for the '96-97 models?

Still interested. - Corny
