Quaraxkad
I have a '92 Cutlass Supreme S 3.1L. I've had it for about a year and legally owned it for a couple of months. I don't drive it often because it's my backup car. It has a few problems that I want to fix. I'm no mechanic but I know how to use a wrench, and most of what I know and have worked on is my '94 Legend. First, if I'm at a stop light and then floor it, it will accelerate until it's just below the redline and then won't shift into second gear for as long as I hold the gas. Not that I normally drive like this, but I figure it's a sign of a problem and I want to fix it. As soon as I let off the gas to maybe 75% it finally shifts into second. I know this car has a kickdown switch, but I don't think that's how it's supposed to operate... Second, it just seems incredibly slow. I mean 15 seconds from 0-60 slow. The engine revs up nicely but it doesn't feel like it ever starts pulling. It's been like this since the first time I drove it before I owned it, so I don't know what it should feel like. I wouldn't expect it to be as fast as my Legend, but I refuse to beleive that it's slower than my mothers '07 Corolla... Do these both sound like transmission problems? I had a basic transmission service done today (fluid, filter, gasket, etc). It also had a bad coil pack, which I replaced along with all 6 wires and plugs last week. GutlessSupreme
1) A 3.1 W-body is incredibly slow. Any "pull" that you may feel will be between 2-3.5k, after that it just dies, gasping for air. 2) Many 4T60 trannies suffer from not wanting to upshift.. I could hold my Cutlass at 5 grand all day and it won't upshift out of first without letting off the gas. There is a reason for these, but I can't remember. A revised valve body or a shift kit is supposed to help, IIRC.
GOT2B GM
It IS slower than your mother's 07 Corolla.
1990lumina
It IS slower than your mother's 07 Corolla. My Lumina is slower than my grandma's '05 Corolla. My Lumina doesn't like shifting into third gear from second @ WOT sometimes either. When you had the tranny service down did the valve/control body get retorqued to spec? Quaraxkad
Ok, so there's actually nothing wrong with the car, that's just how it is? Thats... interesting. When you had the tranny service down did the valve/control body get retorqued to spec? I'm not sure exactly what was done, I can't read the guys writing on my estimate! Is that something I can do myself?
GP1138
The non-electronic transmissions do this, yes. Mine doesn't yet, but it will, I'm sure. I drive it hard.

When you had the tranny service down did the valve/control body get retorqued to spec? Why would this even be touched in a fluid/filter change? Robby1870
Yeah, valve body should not be touched during a filter and gasket. You could adjust the TV cable to make it shift more "on-time" These cars aren't 15-second 0-60 slow, but they are 9 or 10-seconds 0-60 slow. 1990lumina
At my school part of a transmission service is torquing the valve body. The gasket at the top eventually will compress because you have aluminum body and steel bolts with two different heat expansion ratios. Over time the gasket will compress and the valve body will not be torqued tight anymore. On the cars I have serviced the last 3 weeks at school a few of them has at least one turn of movement towards the torque spec on the valve body bolts. Quaraxkad
Apples to Oranges Oh, I thought they were similar since this year also came with a 3.4L in the International. My 3.1L is LH0, and the 3.4L is the LQ1, correct?

My 3.1L is LH0, and the 3.4L is the LQ1, correct? Yes Although the 3.1 has 140hp and the 3.4 has 210hp (I think?). The 3.4 also likes to rev which is the opposite of the 3.1 which makes all it's power below 4k
