ihateallmustangs
Ok this damn car is starting to really piss me off. I have had a tire "whirrr"/rubbing" sound coming from the drivers side front since I bought it. I have changed: wheel bearing rotor caliper brake pads passenger side tie rod tranny mount ball joints are good as well as driver side tie rod. Ok this sound is random and happens almost all the time, unless I gun it it goes away until let off. I can feel the vibration in the floor from it and its annoying as hell. My last bet is a bad tire. I'm not sure how old they are though , them seem ok with a few cracks inbetween the threads nothing major. Can a bad CV cause this? because that is all thats left to change other then a strut bearing/mount. I should also add there is no evidence of the the tire rubbing anywhere. The base of the strut seems a little "polished" on the side that faces the tire. But i see no wear marks.
89GP_SE
you more than likely have a seperated tire. Does the steering wheel shake or shimmy.
1990lumina
I bad inner CV joint might cause a vibration, but it's normally worse and worse as you get into the throttle
Crazy K
check to see if the metal piece that sticks off the strut is rubbing on the tire sidewall!!! If so... bend it back. Been there, done that. next rotate your tires...
ihateallmustangs
Well I know for a fact the CV is shot. It pops and clicks on left hand turns. There is slight play in it when you grab the axle and shift it up and down. The noise does get louder the faster you go ,just if you gun it for a second the sound dims down and then comes back. ihateallmustangs
I didn't think a bad cv would cause that kind of sound. Guess I was wrong.

Canada
Does its kinda match with speed? Are the tires feathered or chopped at all?
ihateallmustangs
No tire wear problems that I can see. Its not the CV and the car now has brand new ball joint and tie rod on the drivers side. I checked the inner tie rod out and there is a slight click by hand but nothing to write home about. Now im guessing the noise may actually be comming from the other side. I have been so tied up thinking its the drivers side. But my g/f says she can feel it vibrateing in the passenger side I spun the drivers side tire in neutral and there was no sound at all. Now for some reason if I stop and crank the wheel all the way to the left and "bounce it to the left 1-3 times it seems to take most of the noise from the drivers side and transfer it back to the passenger. Until I make a right turn it comes back depending how sharp the turn is I take. Some days I can make a sharp left hand turn and the noise will dissapear for a few blocks or until I turn right again. any ideas? The steering has no play and is nice and tight no delay or anything. i do get wandering at times when I slam the brakes at highway speeds. meltboy1
just a thought, but I had a similar problem where I replaced a wheel bearing with a bad one from the factory which led me to change all sorts of other front end shit til I realized it was all still a bad bearing, might wana just double check to make sure the bearing is good... The new one I replaced on the drivers side is definatley good. The passenger I didn't bother to check because me driving the car alone it felt as if all the problem was comming from the drivers side. So I am going to have to check that out. It's prolly needs a ball joint on that side too. The normal ball joint test 12-6 on the drivers side turned out to be false and had nearly 3/8s worth of play when I attempted to remove it. slick
Wait, why is this in Powertrain? There is a Suspension section for a reason.
meltboy1
ya, I know what you mean, but the whole time I thought it was comin from the drivers side it did end up coming from the passengers side being the bearing I initially changed before changing everything else. ihateallmustangs
Turned out to be the passenger side wheel bearing. It was BAD! so bad it felt as if the drivers side was bad.
jdcutty
Lesson number 1 kids: always check out every possibility before replacing parts. Its a lot cheaper that way. Glad you got it fixed though.
