jeremy
can the car be driven with the sc belt gone? I had planned on replacing it when it warmed up but my wife somehow shredded it on her lunch hour. Can the car be driven without damaging it or does this belt drive something else important. thanks
hotrodolds
You can drive it without that belt. You'll just have no power. In fact, you might get beaten by a Yugo.
Euro
I'm pretty sure the car can be ran without it fine. It'll just feel a lot slower....cause, well..yeah

5speedz34
I know this was discussed before, around the time gas first hit $3 . *I think* everyone said it was fine but I'm not sure. I think she might get spark knock. Why not just drive out there and change it? It's not worth the risk. It takes like all of 3 minutes. Check the idlers and tensioner they like to go bad alot. Ohh and don't buy gatorback, word is that they don't get good enough wrap around the SC pulley. Get a Napa belt.

I probably will just change it where she sits, I didn't think that it would be too tough, but it if is too dark when I get off of work I just wanted to know if I could limp it home to swap it in the light. There is a NAPA about a 1/4 mile from where she killed it so I am getting the part from them
5speedz34
Sounds good. Seriously its uber easy. You should have a hood light, since its not a '97. Otherwise use your cell phones "flash" light. I use that all the fricken time.

jeremy
FUCK NAPA!!! I spent $55 for the new belt, had it on for 5 seconds and it started to shred so I shut it off. Took it back to the Novi NAPA and they told me that I was SOL and in not so many words that I pissed away my $55 and to enjoy the belt that I fucked up because I don't know how to install it.....They couldn't explain to me the purpose of the warranty on the belt if they wouldn't replace it after a 10 second install. I go to the livonia NAPA for every car part but this prick from Novi makes me not want to spend another penny at ANY NAPA.....Is there any chance that my Livonia location can swap this out for another belt? I am not sure why it shredded it, but the idlers/tensioners seemed fine

jeremy
I will probably replace the idler as I am sure that it is probably the problem
5speedz34
Is the NAPA in Novi a corporate store? What about the Livonia one? I'm not trying to be a dick but I mean what do you expect? The belt wasn't faulty so why should they give you a new one? Unless their warranty is one of those "lifetime" things...... My buddy used to work for them, I'll give him a call sometime tomorrow and find out what the warranty policy is. EDIT: You should be able to take the belt to any NAPA location. Unless their warranty is one of those "lifetime" things...... what's the fucking purpose of a warranty on the belt if they won't replace it when it is fucked up??? ....and why "upsell" me from the cheaper belt using the warranty as a selling point? .....and warranty aside, if someone pays close to $60 for something, then comes back 15 minutes later with something in shreds you would think that a business owner would at least make it look like they were making an attempt to help make the customer happy on this purchase so that they would come back for future business....I have bought parts for all of my cars as well as multiple tools from NAPA for years.....thousands of dollars, and I get told to piss up a rope about $60....just doesn't sit well with me
93cutty
My little brother has a 97 GTP that was missing the sc belt when he bought it and he drove it for six months with no problems. When he did put a new one on he found that the idler was messed up. So I would def be checking those out.

jeremy
I actually fixed everything tonight.....I asked Murray's about the belt warranty and they told me that if it shreds/breaks for any reason that if I brought back my receipt and any piece of the belt that they would give me a new one free of charge as long as the warranty time hasn't expired.....NAPA FTL! Both those stores are corporate stores. Welcome to corporate America. Its alot like the tire warranty at Wal-Mart; don't try to get tires replace if they failed because of worn parts, alignment issues, etc. My buddy said the lifetime warranty only covers if the belt shows normal use. I shredded belt wouldn't be covered. Granted I don't think the guy should have been a dick to you. What belt did you get a Gatorback? If so, those only carry 1 year warranties now.
