Guest GrandPrixlover1
yep, it's about time for my 3100 SFI to get an oil change and tune up, and I was wondering, If I have to change my spark plugs which would be better to use: NGK or AC Delco Rapid Fire and what would be the best plug wire set to go with the selected set of plugs? I'm not lookin to gain an power, i've just heard good reviews about both brand of plugs, and was wondering what would be better for my engine. I doubt my engine being a 3100 will make a difference in what plug I use, but I could be wrong. Just for those who might suggest it; I'm not using Bosch platinum +4 plugs. I've heard bad reviews about them and don't want to waste my money paying for a name rather than quality.
Euro
NGK's aren't worth the money for these motors IMO. I went with Rapidfires on my old 3.1 and they were great. No noticeable anything in gains, except for gas mileage went up and it idled smoother. Plus they were cheap!
wildbill
I like NGK plugs and AC Delco wires.

I know you really don't get any power gains from a different spark plug, but my car sometimes idles rough and sometimes it doesn't, so I guess it could help me out in that area, and everyone can use a little more mpg. LOL! I'll probably get everything done either when I get my student loan money in, or my tax returns. Whichever comes first. I hate waiting to do things to my car. Guest GrandPrixlover1
Okay I just read about "Pulstar" Spark plugs. Does anyone know about these and if they are credible?
per0781
biggest bs website since the tornado. plus for 25 bucks a spark plug.
Guest GrandPrixlover1
Thanks man, I won't be buying them. I'm gonna go with the AC Delco rapid fire spark plug and wire set when I need to get them.
hotrodolds
Autolite copper plugs are good, too. Dirt cheap, and as reliable as the day is long. It's what us guys with modded 3800s use, too. I agree that the AC Delco wires are the way to go.
5speedz34
Stock plugs and some nice Napa wires.
Guest GrandPrixlover1
This is good I'm learning. You guys are a big help, when it comes to this stuff. I think if I'm gonna mod my car I'll start with something that would actually be considered a modification. I'm getting my tax returns back soon. I don't know how much I'll get back, but i'd say in the 4-500 dollar range what are some good/easy to install mods to go with for that price. I already have a K&N high flow cotton panel air filter so I'm off to a good start.
Psych0matt
A quote I found on a Corvette forum in regards to the Pulstar plugs $25 a pop for these things?!? Unless they make a SUBSTANTIAL difference in a car, they would be better off called the BendOver Plugs.
pwmin
regular ACD's will be fine. don't get autolites.
hotrodolds
Yeah, for the 3100/3400 engines, I'm not as up to speed on what plugs are best, since I dont' have one anymore. I just know for the 3800, the Autolites are very effective, and cheap to boot. I like NGK or AC Delco. From what I understand, AC Delco plugs are rebranded NGK plugs anyhow. I wouldn't use anything BUT AC Delco wires. Aftermarket stuff TYPICALLY doesn't have the quality of insulation/noise supression stuff that the OE wire does. 88red4cyl
I used the Autolite copper plugs on my 3800, and they work great for me.. Made a huge difference in how the car ran, but I guess anything I put in there would be better than the stock plugs with 137,000 miles on them. pwmin
I know people swear by autolite 104's in L67's, but I will never use autolite plugs in a GM. ACD's aren't much more expensive at all. do we really need another spark plug thread?
hotrodolds
Well, you gotta remember the reason for the 104's is the heat range being colder, too. It's not an OE replacement plug, per se.

ACD's aren't much more expensive at all. [/quote'] Why not? Just because Autolite was ONCE connected with Ford doesn't mean they make junk. Autolite plugs are high quality. do we really need another spark plug thread? I guess. It's the same shit and arguments over and over again, isn't it? hotrodolds
It's amazing at how such a little thing like a spark plug can spark such a heated debate sometimes. Speaking of...what of the argument that iridium plugs in cylinders 3 & 4, with copper in 2, 6, & 1, with platinum in #5? I've heard some guys just have the best of luck with that. Brian P
NGK V-Power in both cars. The inexpensive plug with the least resistance compared to Delco, Autolite, etc.
hotrodolds
I used NGK V-Power in a couple engines with good results. I'd not be afraid to recommend them in the least.
93CutlassSupreme
It's amazing at how such a little thing like a spark plug can spark such a heated debate sometimes. Yes it is. People latch onto a brand for some unknown reason and INSIST that brand is the best. There's very little actual reasoning, or discussion of FACTS. Speaking of...what of the argument that iridium plugs in cylinders 3 & 4, with copper in 2, 6, & 1, with platinum in #5? I've heard some guys just have the best of luck with that. That sounds retarded. Why would you mix and match plugs on the same motor?
hotrodolds
Sarcasm pwns joo! Just kiddin'. Was playin' around, trying to add some fuel to the fire with that one. Wondered what kind of reaction I'd get from that.
pwmin
It's amazing at how such a little thing like a spark plug can spark such a heated debate sometimes. hahaha...pun The reason I won't use Autolites is because I know several GM mechanics that have 30 years experience each that have seen time and time again how much better ACD's work in most GM's than Autolites. I actually use champion plugs in my jeep. I used NGK iridiums in the riviera and they worked great.

Where can I find the NGK iridium plugs at? and last but not least, can I use NGK plugs with AC Delco wires?
hotrodolds
If you just walk in and ask for the spark plug, whatever brand of plug they give you will be the proper heat range. Us modded guys use colder plugs to help with detonation prevention and what not. Any auto parts store SHOULD have the NGK Iridiums. So will the dealer, since AC plugs are made by NGK. And, yes, you can use any plug with any wire set. I, personally, won't recommend anything other than AC Delco for GM cars.
