Crazy K
the engine is assumed to be an un-rebuilt motor with an actual 225,000 miles on the clock. The motor still works great... but appears to have a blown coolant jacket on the rear headgasket. This is not confirmed yet as to be the source of the leak...... but I did overheat it. WHAT SHOULD I DO? new headgaskets... and let it go? use a steel head headgasket, which is thinner? (unconfirmed, I read this in a post by brian P) stick in 94-95 fulcrum rockers to bump up the rocker ratio from 1.5 to 1.6? stick in LS6 or some such valve springs? Cover it in gasoline, throw a match on it and let it burn? or any combination of the above? seriously, it can;t be that far gone, can it? 19Cutlass94
Use felpro gaskets. The rockers will have to be 96+ for fulcrum roller rockers and you CANNOT use those as your MPFI heads do not have provisions for them. You will have to go with 94-95 1.6 rockers. They are not fulcrum, they are ball rockers. Why the hell would you put in LS6 springs on a stock cam? Theres no need and your wasting your money. Fix it, use 94-95 rockers or buy my 3100 heads and intakes ( which have the fulcrum roller rockers)

wildbill
Replace the gaskets and see how it runs, then let it go.

Crazy K
i'd personally pull off anything that I would like to keep then send the pos to the yard I have a complete parts car for it... but with a 4.5 engine so that won't fly. It is getting fixed, eventually. It came to mind.... that I have the 91 vert's 3.1 which is going to go into deep storage once I pick up the tgp motor that will sub for it. I could pull that in five minutes... after all it has no tranny attached. I could do a tear down and inspection... regasket it and speed swap it in a day a few weeks from now. or I could regasket the motor in car and see if it flies. Robby1870
you could go with iron head 3.1L head gaskets, they are 0.020" thinner, so it'll bump compression just a hair.

I need to figure out what mod to do vs not do etc etc

1QUICKHATCH
I have some mild ported 3.1 heads, milled, with 3angle valve job that I would let go for $400 (+shipping) Use them with the iron head gaskets and it will give that 3.1 a nice kick! If your looking for more than just a nice kick then send me a PM!

93CutlassSupreme
A GM product will run poorly long after most other cars would have stopped running altogether.

Brian P
If it were me, the 225k engine would be fully rebuilt. I couldn't justify doing head gaskets and nothing else with that mileage + the few cases of overheating, I think you'd be taking a risk. If I were selling the car, that's one thing but if it's mine, I'd freshen it up. Or just put in a Crane H-260, 1.6 rockers, LS6 springs (here you'd need em) and see how long the bottom end lasts (I'd have to have a lot of spare time for that one)
Crazy K
I still would like to talk to you on the phone Brian. I am not worried... I will have enough bottom ends lying around in case one spins a bearing or something. I will have the 91 verts and the 91 sedans in the garage. and yes... I think I will sell the car once it is restored. clean title.... clean the car... and let it go.
