nequamminor
I bought my '95 last year knowing that the transmission was pretty well done for. I took it to a local transmission shop, and got a rebuilt transmission from Russ Moore installed for 1898.00 with a 75000 mile warranty. I've since gotten the engine and the rest of the car into decent running shape. A couple things about this transmission bug me a lot though. When the car is warmed up and you're going about 35-37 mph, and stomp the gas pedal all at once, it tries to downshift to first. Basically when it tries to do this the rpm's fly up to about 6400 or 6500 and it just revs. If I let off the gas once this happens it jerks a little forward like it engages into first and then shifts back up to OD or whatever gear it was in. Another thing it likes to do, even when its fully warmed up, is a rather rough 1-2 shift. Its not violent, and it doesn't sound bad or anything, but its not anywhere near as smooth as the other shifts. It may not be anything important, but I've never driven an OEM 4t60e with one of these engines mated to it, so I don't know. I've taken it to the shop once and the head mechanic said something along the lines of "If you're going a certain speed, and the rpm's are at a certain level, and you stomp the gas, its just going to act like that. Its acting just fine." I don't really agree with that at all. I can make the car do it time and time again, I did it 3 times in a row on the way home today to make sure that's exactly how and when it does it. I don't think it does it for any other shifts. Should I take it to another mechanic and see what they think? The head mechanic who put in the transmission said that if I'm not comfortable with the idea of it being ok he'd put in a new one. That makes me wonder. Other then that I don't know what exactly is going on with it or what I should do about it.
ns87
My lord. That's a good warranty for the transmission, but that is a STEEP price. Did you check the fluid level?
nequamminor
Fluid looks bright red and looks good and full. Also, that 1898.00 was for the transmission and installation. I realize a 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo Z34 is worth about 1750 in good shape... keep that on the down low though...
19Cutlass94
From that speed, downshifting to first is normal. First gear tops out at about 45mph. That 1-2 shift your talking about is normal as well. Mine does it and Im sure almost everyone here that owns a 4t60-e will tell about its famous 1-2 shift. And that price isnt too bad with that kind of warranty. The tranny Im looking at is $2500 + converter
nequamminor
I don't know if I specified this or not but when its revving about 6400 or 6500 its more or less in neutral. There isn't any pulling or accelerating at that point until I let off the gas, and then I get a little jolt.
xtremerevolution
That price is insane. I would suggest having your own transmission rebuilt. I just found the receipt for my rebuild, which cost me $350 for parts, $600 for labor, and $195 for a new torque converter. They had also fixed a left ball joint. Everything altogether cost me a grand total of $1255. On a side note though, they wrote a note on the receipt: "Vehicle looks like use for racing. Trans is warranted for use not abuse. If transmission is damage from racing, warranty will be voided."

Night Fury
LOL! And my first goes to 40, second at 80. Yes, I have 4t60-e. The hard 1-2 shift is starting to get sloppy, as well.

Have you tried to install a transmission cooler yet? Those usually make a pretty big difference. Ask Crazy K and he'll tell you. Sometimes a transmission cooler will fix problems entirely. I'd highly suggest it before you go around rebuilding your tranny.

Yeah these transmissions heat up quite a bit. A tranny cooler is highly recommended.

The main reason is so it wouldn't be so freakin slow in town after finishing up a long trip, as I plan on ALOT of travel this summer. I just need to get my hands on one.
