stockgp
sure doesn't to me. don't know what the chunks are from yet. i'm guessing cam bearings, as the cam is supposed to be new

1990lumina
What engine is this you have apart? I assume it was bought and said to be been rebuilt?
5speedz34
My guess is 3.1 Turbo. I could be a rebuild gone wrong.
slick
5000 miles? With the bearings in that bad of shape, you'd figure 200,000 miles.
stockgp
correct, this is a 3.1 turbo motor. it's the motor from this car: http://www.tgpforums.com/index.php?topic=4054.0 this is the info i have from the guy i bought it from: 1st pm: hey man actually the engine is complete except for exhaust, and turbo/intercooler..... not sure what i want for the whole engine, but its still in the car and i have no way to pull it out, so unless you have any ideas.................. icon_question but i am willing to do the manifolds for you, and the heads i could strip the engine down and send it in smaller boxes if you really want the whole thing and you dont mind reassembling it......but that would also be expensive, just like shipping an entire engine+paying somebody to tear it out for me. but i would say for the heads and intake manifolds, plus the fuel lines....400+shipping+insurance LMK...... 2nd pm: hey man, i hope you had a merry Christmas! i sure did here is whats up with the engine.... my bro-in-law and i pulled the upper intake off and were in the process of taking off the front head and lower intake when his hands got so cold he couldn't work any longer, so we called it a day, and i decided to wait to see what you wanted to do. you are more than welcome to come down and pull it yourself, let me know when you want to come down. i was hoping to get more than 250 for the engine, yes i know the gaskets and seals will probably need replaced since the car hasn't been started in about 4 years, but still, it had like 5,000 miles on it after a COMPLETE tear down and rebuild/upgrade, so its a very stout motor. i was looking for more like 400 but we can work out a deal, if you want. im just trying to get rid of as much as i can before i have the carcass hauled away, and scrapped, and by getting rid of more parts, i can help more people with their cars (so mine can live on through them...lol) anyway its after midnight on Christmas, so i guess its boxing day now, at least in Canada.....and i need to get up in 6 hrs to go to work, so i will wrap it up, you let me know what you want to do and we will make it happen. john
Bake82
Shit man.....that looks bad. Whats with two low milage "rebuilds" have turned out looking like they had 200,000+ miles! I hope the turbo I'm getting from John is still in descent shape!! UGH
Euro
wow that looks horrible!!! Damn I remember that car when it was nice and running awesome(the original black tgp) It looks like hell now
stockgp
kyle, you buying the gt28 turbo from the same john i bought the motor from? if so, good luck. i just pulled the cam out. i'm not really sure what to look for as far as damage. looks intact to me. the cam bearings, just from wha ti can tell, seem to be intact as well. i have no idea what the metal chunks are from

stockgp
then the guy wants me to give him another 50 bucks. he had buyers for the exhaust manifolds and fuel/ignition parts of the harness. i told him we made a deal for the entire motor, including the harness. however, i didn't care if he wanted to keep the manifolds. i told him i didn't want him to feel cheated, so i offered to throw him a couple extra bucks for the harness. ater i got the motor out, he tels me to go ahead and keep the manifolds and harness. if he heard back about the manifolds, he'd send me the money for shipping and i would mail them to the buyer. the day i got home, he sends me a message saying he wanted another 50 bucks since he hadn't heard back from the buyer and i wanted the harness. he said that would make him feel that he hadn't been cheated. now I"M inclined to ask him for some of MY money BACK grrrr... mfewtrail
So, I guess we know why John really parked his car now. I highly doubt it was "rebuilt" at all. Or it was given a shitty backyard rebuild just like that other turbocharged 3.1 someone bought recently. Did the cam have anything stamped on the ends indicating that it was from Comp? After seeing all that, I don't think I'll ever purchase a rebuilt engine from anyone except a friend or family member..so I really know what I'm getting. stockgp
no, no stamps or engravings anywhere. it does have dual valve springs, but who knows if they are from comp cmas, either
stockgp
well, here's his reply: damn. thats bad but, you think you feel cheated? i paid over 2 grand for a rebuild! icon_cry, i even had a receipt for all the parts supposedly icon_redface replaced and all the work that was supposedly icon_redface done to my engine, now i feel really cheated, knowing that it wasnt done properly. icon_cry icon_cry icon_cry but i promise you that the engine was totally apart and cleaned ( i saw it with my own eyes) icon_eek but i never saw all the parts and the reassembly, i just picked the car up when it was done.....if i thought he was worth it i would go beat the shit out of the mechanic who worked on it cause i think he sold my parts for cash. he dissapeared for a month after i got my car back, not even his parents knew where he was....totally worthless 28yo guy living with mom and dad....i shoulda paid somebody more money to do it, but he was good for everything else.. icon_confused and yes i only put 5k on the clock since he had the motor totally apart.....so i think we both got screwed....you wanna come help me kick his ass? icon_twisted

Bake82
I did buy a turbo off him. I hope to god the seals aren't fucked. I'm not concerned so much about how it looks, more how it works! I would be raising hell! Tell him it was not what you bought, and that he should give you money back. I would also threaten legal action by way of mail fraud..although I don't know if you could do mail fraud because you picked it up. Essentially if my turbo is fucked, or he doesn't deliver....he'll be having cops knock on his door!

He has written proof that the seller stated that this engine was recently rebuilt. Get a written statement from a professional mechanic stating that there's noway in hell this engine was recently rebuilt, and then go to small claims.
