hshamblin
95 Olds Cutlass, 3100 with 190,000. I have replaced the TPS and IAC, it did not solve the problem. Starts of when cold, car will not start after it's been running and shut off. Lets say you pull in at a gas station and shut it off. It will not start up until it sits 15-20 minutes. It cranks over, fires like it is going to start but does not, sometimes it sounds like it backfires through the intake. Also when I slow down to stop, redlight for example, it will quit and will not restart unless I wait several minutes. I took it to Advance Auto to have the code read because the SES stays on, but they say their scanner will not work on a 95 or earlier model. jeremy
my wife is reading this thread over my shoulder on the 42" plasma and says that she would guess that your problem is the crankshaft positioning sensor.
Crazy K
my 93 vert has a weak fuel pump... and has similiar symptoms... but I don't think that would be the probelm... as the SES light would not likely be triggered. here's what I would do. new fuel filter, new crank and new cam sensor... and plugs if they have not been changed or are old enough. those are all definite wear out parts that should be replaced if never done. no guarentee on that fixing it though. When does the ses light turn on? all the time? only after the car has warmed up? etc etc etc. circumstances give a fairly good clue on causation. hshamblin
The SES stays on and never goes off. It seems like it is getting harder to start even when the engine is cold. My son just left for work with the car. It took about 10 tries before it started. Each time he cranked it over it hit like it was going to start and then "coughs" through the intake. rockfangd
ICM ignition control module . common. works when cold and malfunctions when hot. could also be the guel pump also
spiderw31
ICM ignition control module . common. works when cold and malfunctions when hot. could also be the guel pump also I was thinking ICM too... If you have a timing light, hook it up while cranking and see if you get spark. If not, you pull a plug wire off and get the terminal close to the heads/block. Then crank it (do not hold the wire at this time), and see if you get spark.
hshamblin
I pulled the plug wire and it is firing. Every time you crank it hits like its going to start, but will not. I also noticed this, when the car does finally start, the rpms surge to 2500 and then it idles down.
hshamblin
It was the fuel pump.
