joey b
on my sister's 94 3100. The car had the head gaskets and intake gaskets replaced about 3 years ago. Has 188K miles on the ticker. Had no problems until about 3 months ago. Runs like a champ all of the time but will religiously run all the way up on the temp guage. Gets so hot that the coolant will be boiling into the overflow reservoir. No amount of bleeding the system seems to fix the problem. No leaking coolant either. I'm lost. Heat doesn't work worth a damn either. From time to time the temperature will drop out from the 260 mark and the heat will work briefly, but promptly returns to full tilt on the temp guage. I'm going to replace the thermostat, but that really seems to not be exactly the problem. It opens and I can bleed the system just fine. But in time it has air in the system again. Doober
The best way is to replace thermostat, water pump, replenish coolant and bleed system. Also i'd check sensors, and check fan for normal operating. anyway it would be cheaper than fixing overheated engine
Schurkey
Why not have the "air" in the cooling system tested to see if it's combustion gasses? Not hard, not expensive. If it's combustion gasses, you've got another bad gasket; or a cracked casting.
joey b
how do I check to see if it is combustion gases? Only thing I could gather is that it is boiled coolant. Smells like it.

In case of bad gasket - exhaust gas will be white
joey b
If the heat doesnt work worth a shit hows the heater core? the heat only doesn't work because there is air in the cooling system. As soon as the coolant gets flowing correctly the heat works just dandy.
