my Cutlass started jerking going from first to second gear today. i pulled out of a gas station and it reved high but didn't shift so i let off of it, it will usually shift, but when i got on it again it just reved high bogged down a little and then jerked into second, i wasn't running it hard. so how bad is it.

i was going straight, the fluid is still full and red(it smells a little burnt), and it does it every time i take off now it doesn't even matter how many RPM i go when it shifts into second it does it. i drove it to college and back, about 90 miles altogether but once i get it into second it runs perfectly.

When was the last time it was serviced? There are a couple parts you can try and replace to see if it makes a difference, but if it hasnt had a filter/fluid change in a long time Id start there.

i am going to guess it has never had the fluid or filter changed because when i got it it still had the original oil filter and the original air filter, so i am guessing that the trans filter and fluid have been in there along time. but it isn't a high milage car, it only has 73K on it now. we will be changing the fluin and getting a new filter when the temperature gets warmer, and if that doesn't fix it it could get expensive.

definitely change the fluid and filter. Don't bother with additives right now. My sister's '02 GP SE with the 4T65e tranny developed a sloppy/slipping 1-2 shift. Did a fluid/filter service, the slip disappeared and it's been gone over 8,000 miles.

Filter/fluid change is surely needed. I usually change mine every 25k. Because of the way these tranny's are positioned and with no tranny fluid cooler ( other than the radiator ) heat doesnt really escape very well, and theres not much air flow to the tranny to cool it off either.
