Guest GrandPrixlover1
Whenever I park my car on an incline and I put the car in park my car can roll quite a bit before it stops. I was wondering if this was due to a failing parking pin in the transmission, or is it more sinister than it really is. I can just picture hearing something pop/break off in the transmission, EEEEEK!!! I'm just wondering, and I don't want to take my car to a transmission shop. I've heard the horror stories i.e.: go into shop and they say that you have metal shavings in your transmission pan, only to your knowledge when you checked the pan before you went to the shop there were no metal shavings there. hmmmm.... kinda makes ya wonder. but I'm asking here first because I want to put off going to a trans shop if avoidable. 8-)
ManicMechanic
How far does it roll? I generally use the parking brake when on an incline anyway...
Guest GrandPrixlover1
at least a good foot or so, but it's just when it comes to a stop so abruptly, it feels like if it continues that somethings gonna break off. and sometimes it happens on shallow inclines as well. I'm just wondering if it's normal for this to happen. Thanks
ManicMechanic
Yes, it is normal, but it's not good for it. Try to use the parking brake more often.
Guest GrandPrixlover1
Thanks man. 8-) Yeah and I've started to use it more often, I just got to get used to using it LOL. I also had to get used to using an automatic shifter on the floor. I kept putting my right hand up to the steering column to shift the car, and i'm like "duh you idiot, it's on the floor not on the column", I can be so silly sometimes. ManicMechanic
I know that well...My other ride is an Olds Silhouette with column shift...I'm either grabbing air on the floor in the van or air on the column in the car...LOL! 1990lumina
Could bw wrong engine mounts that could cause movement as well.
Dark Ride
just hold the brake a little and let it back down slowly after you put it in park otherwise I'd bet its not too good for it.
Chancho
its not good at all to do that to a car, and if that parking pin does break you will definatly need a tranny rebuild, its always good to use ur pk brake in the car all the time incline or not, u never know when someone could hit ur car when ur parked and thats it u need a tranny rebuild
GtipGary
Now correct me if im wrong (most likely wrong) but shouldnt the linkage pop when someone hits you instead of your trans getting screwed???
Regal_GS_1989
I would think that if someone hits your car har enough while parked that would require a tranny rebuild, you'd have bigger things to worry about then the tranny. Chancho
nope it doesnt give, have you ever watched movies of the repo guys taking cars back sometimes they have to drag a car out of a driveway, and if it hsappenes to be parked in forward and front wheel drive, they have to drag it out, and all you hear is the dires just sliding on the ground, worst thing for a tranny, with the ecception of a neutral drop
AWeb80
I generally use the parking brake when on an incline anyway... me too. I hate having to yank it out of park if it is wedged too hard.....I always use the brake.

ManicMechanic
Anything with 4 wheel discs.
wildbill
Anything with 4 wheel discs. X2 Using the e brake often readjusts the rear calipers. Which is needed esp on GMs.
ManicMechanic
Well, except for older Corvettes and newer Silverados with the e-brake inside the rotor hat...
