I admit i dont know a hole lot about cams, I know there purpose and how they work and what most of the specs mean but when it comes down to how those specs affect a motor, i'm lost.

I'm building a 2.8 with a 3400 top end with minor port work, just gasket matching and I'm running turbo all this bolted to a getrag 282.

What kind of specs am I looking for? From what i understand turbo's dont like a lot of over lap, over lap is ok just not excessive like a lot of the bigger cams.

I'm not looking for anything extreme, just a nice improvement over stock. this is mostly a daily driver but I do a lot of autoX and hit the drag strip a few times a year.

also if anyone had any links to sites selling cams that would help out to.

thanks

i think i seen it somewhere saying you cant, looks like they are full of shit.

I don't think you can just put 3X00 UIM and LIM on 2.8/3.1 heads...

And neil I know nothing for your cam, however I do believe R_dubya and Gutlessurpme are using a Crane 260 in his TGP. Mine want to talk with them.

I know nothing about cams either, I just followed other peoples recommendations  but yea I have a Crane H260 in my TSTE, a couple of people use the 272, it's got a little more radical profile than mine.

You're right that boosted cars like less overlap. They don't need it when the air is being shoved into the cylinder from the super/turbo charger. My guess is that you'll want a cam with a 114-116 degree lobe seperation angle but whatever you get I wouldn't go below 113 degrees. Lift and duration are you're own preference on what you want as far as driveability/performance. You say you've done minor port work so you're head may not like a smaller cam. I'm not really sure how our v6 heads flow.

Look at the catalogs on wesbites like Comp's and Crane's. They list all the specs for their cams, how they'll behave, and what you're engine should have to use them. If nothing else you can try calling or emailing them. They are willing to help. I'm not sure how much they know about V6's though.

Don't skimp on the rest of the valvetrain. Replace at least the rods and lifters with good components. It's way worth it. Also if you're doing head work, make sure they do a 3-angle valve job. It's usually worth some ponies.

maybe that was it, i just remember seeing something about a L82/LA1 top end not working with a 2.8/3.1.

Yeah to do it you need the 3x00 heads, upper and lower intakes, fuel rail, timing cover and all the accesories off the front of the motor. you also need custom length pushrods unless you use the rockers out of a 95-96 3100.

also i found this cam guide over on 60degreev6 http://members.shaw.ca/betterthanyoutoo/camshaft_guide.htm
