Fuel Delivery Problem

yesterday i was going to get gas riding on E when my Z34 started cutting out every few seconds. it was dropping 400 or so rpms's and jerking the car a bit. i was just thinking i was about to run ot of gas. i got it to the gas station and filled her up. then she wouldnt start. i left and came back with a buddy. determined i was getting spark, so i sprayed some starter fluid down the plenum and she cranked up. still cutting out every few seconds i drove her home.

this morning i tested the fuel pressure and was getting 45 psi. after i tested it, it cranked right up and idled fine. turned it off, added fuel system cleaner, and started her up again, idling fine. took it for a drive, and when i came to a stop 1 block away, it died. wouldnt start. i had to add the starter fluid down the plenum to start her up again. this time it didnt cut out and jerk, it just died. when i drove it that block back home it didnt cut out but i double footed it so it wouldnt die again.

a buddy suggested that i got some crap out of the bottom of my tank and clogged up my injectors or something along those lines, but i think the filter would catch the crap. besides, if a injector was clogged, it wouldnt be sparratic cut outs, it would be constant. so the only thing that i think of is the fuel pressure regulator having gone loony.

what do you all think? im lost not having a vehicle to drive.

by the way, in the last month i have replaced the plugs, wires, IAC, TPS.

I would say the fuel pump. The original fuel pump filter strainer is made of aluminum and could have broken into pieces. You might be getting 45psi but as the fuel pressure builds up, the bits of pieces of that broken filter strainer or some debris is clogging the fuel pump. At first, you might get the right pressure but as the pressure constantly builds up then it pulls those debris and then totally blocking the fuel pump passage way.

Think of this way like a lottery balls are being picked up. The pressure builds up and congregates the balls into the opening until the hole is plugged up by one ball and if the pressue is lowered then the balls falls off unclogging the hole opening.

if the aluminum filter strainer had broken into pieces, wouldnt that prohibit it from running completely once the pieces got clogged up in there. it just bucked and kept running.

today i tried to start it and it wouldnt. tested the pressure again and it was good. added the starting fluid down the intake again, started her up and let it idle for a few minutes and it idled good. turned it off and restarted it fine. took it for a drive and it did the cutting out thing again, but not as bad or nearly as often.

the thing that boggles my mind the most is when cranking i got 45 psi. im almost thinking i have water in my gas....

i need some more insight.

If you can get it idling good, disconnect the dogbones and rock the motor back and forth. My crank position sensor wire had rubbed bare and would ground out against the block, so I would lose fire and it would intermittently cut out. Just a thought.

i took out my tank and emptied it out, thinking i had bad gas(dumb arco gas). my fuel pump strainer was still in tact. one of my baffles was broken so i just took it out. i put some chevron plus in it. it runs rough, but no longer cuts out. i checked my plugs to make sure they werent fouled. always starts up too.

what could be causing it to run rough? it just doesnt have the power.

Intake gasket possibly. take a can of carb spray and spray it around the intake gasket and see if idle changes. also is there an ses light? check vacum lines

i actually just replaced my intake gaskets, fuel filter too. no SES light, no codes. all vacuum lines are connected and in tact. i talked to a mechanic and he suggested to have my injectors flow tested and electrically tested. this will cost about $40 if i pull them myself.

im always weary when it comes to have injectors looked at cuz i cant look at them myself to determine if they are bad or not. the mechanic could say they need to be rebuilt even if they dont and i wont know any better and end up spending $200 for nothing.

it ended up being my injectors. 3 of them were out of spec and the other 3 were ok but going to die soon as well. so i bought 6 new injectors and my Z purrs better than it ever has before. i only paid $250 too.
