How many of you actually repair your own car?

  1. 1. How many of you actually repair your own car?

    • Nah... I just wash, wax, and detail it!
      0
    • I change the oil and air filter
    • I do brake and suspension work
    • I do internal engine/transaxle repair
    • I do it all including some body work
    • There is nothing on a W-body I cannot do including paint work
    • What's a W-body?

I've done everything, including some bodywork.- the valance on my TGP was painted myself and you wouldn't know it wasn't factory if I didn't tell you, turned out really well. Only thing I haven't done on a car is major motor work. I've had the intake off and replaced the fuel injectors, done a tuneup, but nothing major like a rebuild. I have however done complete engine and transmission rebuilds on my dirtbikes and scooters, can't be much different.

Well, I'm no where NEAR as mechanically inclined as most of you, I'm still learning as I go. Although when I started on this site I didn't really know HOW to work on cars much at all, I just knew everything else about cars lol.

I do all the oil changes and shit on my car, I've done plugs/wires, brakes...just your simple tune up stuff. I've also helped rebuild a 3.1 that my buddy has a couple of summers ago. That was definitely a fun, learning experience. Although, some of the things that I had fixed at a shop I would've loved to do myself. Like the most recent LIM gasket failure on my GP. I wanted to do that myself, but I needed the car quick and warranty is still FTW.

Although on older cars, I've done a lot more. Alternators, radiators, taken the top ends off, plugs/wires, brakes, battery, belts/hoses, and I'm sure a lot more because it is a TON easier on all non-computer controlled cars. God damn it's like night and day.

euro, I disagree.

I have a carbed sbc sitting in my garage neatly packed into my 81 z28, and that thing sucks as much as my 3.1 in the buick I had as a daily driver for a while. Different issues(w-body likes brakes and light mechanical work, my 81 gets wiring and fabricating parts a lot)

I would not say its a world of difference going between a muscle car and newer style daily driver. when you get into the hybrids, 48V systems, bose active suspention and all the other new new stuff, I frankly can't keep up.

before I got my car I knew how to change spark plugs (on some cars) and easy stuff. I barely knew anything about cars. I got raped for changing the LIM gasket on my old 2.8. I now have removed almost every bolt from my car now and changed out the entire engine. With all of my practice I have done engine swaps on other cars and tranny swaps. I do a ton of car work for a lot of people. Some day when I have the $$ and time I will do an engine rebuild just for the fun of it.

I was referring to older cars, like recently I helped a family friend work on his 67 chevelle SS, and it was a breeze to work on. Aside from tuning the carb and getting the timing right, it was a lot easier IMO than working on, lets say my old 3.1 or my GP. Working on our Monte is sort of in between, since it has a small share of computer electronics, yet still the same old style tech of motor.
