npfd
Hi all, I have read dohc v6's post about the fuel odor around the car and we have a similar problem too. I didn't want to hijack his or her thread... We have a 97 Cutlass Supreme with the 3100 and around 165k KM and recently I've noticed that after parking the car and shutting it off as soon as I get out I can smell fuel odor is quite strong. And when I walk around the back I can smell it even more as if it was originating around there. On a day with light rain I decided to go for a run and come back and park it on a wet surface. Waited a bit started the car, then moved it. I couldn't find any indication of gas on the driveway but the smell is always there even with the car running. So far the underneath of the car is great shape. But with the winters here we hadn't had the time to go probing underneath, especially that we can't find the source of the leak (as it doesn't seem major yet). This seems to occur all the time, even when it's 1/2 or full... Is there anything common on these W bodies relating to the fuel system that would need to be inspected? Maybe where the lines go into a tank, a gasket there? Thanks for any input!
GP1138
Perhaps a purge line has popped off of your charcoal canister or possibly a vent valve on the tank.
npfd
hey GP1138, Where would the charcoal canister be located? And I think the vent valve on the tank would be the same place where the fuel lines go in? thanks!
GP1138
Charcoal canister is usually located under one of the rear quarters, IIRC...
GutlessSupreme
the charcoal canister is behind the quarter panel, directly under the fuel filler line. you should see 3 lines come from this area - the large fuel filler line and two much smaller lines going to the charcoal canister. I believe those two are plastic on the newer cars, those or the rubber couplings may be cracked. Older cars had metal lines; mine were literally disintegrated due to rust. The vent valve is hooked up to a smaller line of those heading up to the top of the tank, it's part of the pump assembly I believe. out of curiosity, what does NP stand for? I have two uncles in a local NPFD, I'm a little curious to see if it's the same NP...
npfd
Thanks dudes! I'll keep this information saved for now and when we come around to figure out the problem we'll definitely have a look into this. Thanks! Which may be a couple of months if the spring comes along quickly As for npfd.... well I don't know if it's the same group as your uncles are in! Is it something to do with Fire Departments? I've recently searched the term up on the net. For my nickname, it's supposed to stand for No Prayer For The Dying, which is a title of an album by Iron Maiden.... I guess I didn't think about the T back in the day As I was searching for charcoal canister, I stumbled upon a page by autozone http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/0e/cf/ce/0900823d800ecfce/repairInfoPages.htm I think this could be relevant? Thanks!
GutlessSupreme
lol well no, that wouldn't be the same group yea they're both firefighters. That page could be handy, I'd bookmark it. Autozone has some suprisingly good information online sometimes.
