RJansen658
Ok so I have this 97 GP 3800, it keeps stalling, and for the life of me I can't figure it out. When the car came in it would run at the rev limiter the moment it was started. The lower intake gasket was sucking so much air it was making it race. I replaced the gasket, along with a new throttle body gasket, injector o-rings, plenum gaket, and thermostat and gasket. Now, after all the work is done, it starts up, idles at 2k for about 2 seconds, then stalls out. If you give it gas, it will stay running just fine, and you can two foot it to drive it. I thought maybe IAC, TPS, or MAF. I tested the IAC and TPS, they check out fine. I had an extra MAF, which I tried to no avail. I then turned up the idle screw, and it will stay running until the next time you shut it off, then when you try to restart it, the IAC compensates for the idle screw and it stalls again. I can actually turn the idle screw all the way up, start it, and it still goes to 2k rpm for a second or two then stalls. I hae checked everything I can think of. There are no codes in the ECM, there are no vacuum leaks, fresh tune-up, no misfires, good fuel pressure and volume. To be honest its like the ECM won't allow me to use the idle screw to adjust idle. I can adjust the screw all the way down, start the car, keep it running by using my hand on the throttle body linkage, and adjust the idle while I keep it running until it idles by itself, and then drive it just fine as long as I don't shut it off after adjusting it. Then the next time I shut it off and start it, it revs to 2k for a second or two, then dies. Then, WITHOUT BACKING OUT THE IDLE SCREW, I start it and keep it running, then adjust the idle screw up even more until it idles by itself and drives correctly, then I shut it off and it starts all over. I can keep doing this until the idle screw is at its maximum raise, and it still will stall. I believe the computer keeps compensating for me raising the idle by adjusting the IAC. I have driven it many many miles, and the computer never learns the correct idle, its like the computer thinks its idling too high, so tries to lower it to the point of stalling. I can also block the accelerator linkage at 3k RPM, then shut it off with the linkage still blocked at 3k, then restart it and it revs to 2k then stalls, all the while with the linkage held where it was previously idling at 3k. Any ideas anyone?
19Cutlass94
Your not suppose to touch the idle screw in the first place so theres your first problem. Have you even tried and idle re-learn?
rockfangd
yeah pull the ecm fuse for about 20 seconds and try to start the car without touching the accelerator. There is a post on the idle relearn around here somewhere
