Dark Ride
I know that you can check coil packs on Four-wheelers and stuff by measuring the resistance between the two wires. Can we do the same for our coils, I have a bunch of them laying around and I'd like to check them.
Addicted To Boost
I'm not sure how you would go about checking them while they are off the car, but I do know how you check them while they are in the car. Pull the fuel pump fuse. When they are in the car, go to the first coilpack on the left. Pull both wires going to that coil pack. Have someone crank over the car and you should see an arc between the two posts. Repeat the same steps for each coil pack and that is how you check to see if they are good or not. Hope that helps! mfewtrail
Yes, you can measure the resistance on them. Primary side(on the bottom of the coil, measure between the two slots where they plug into the ICM): .35-1.5 ohms Secondary(measure between the two posts where your plug wires go): 5000-7000 ohms BTW, you might need to rig up something to attach to the multimeter leads depending on what type you're using. The slots on the bottom of the coils are pretty small, so some of the multimeters with large leads will not be able to probe them deep enough to make contact with the metal. Paper clips straightened out and bent around the leads will work. You can go a step further and secure the paper clips into electrical butt splice connectors that will fit over the end of your leads. These work well for other jobs such as backprobing electrical weatherpack connectors. A few multimeter companies make thinner lead attachments for this purpose, but you usually can't find those in stores...so paper clips work well enough.
